Role Overview
SMEC is seeking a Senior Transport Engineer to lead transport planning and traffic engineering projects within the Roads and Highways functional group.
The role involves project management, technical leadership, and coordination of multidisciplinary engineering teams on medium to large infrastructure projects.
Reporting to: Section Manager or designated supervisor
Key Responsibilities
Project & Team Management

Manage medium to large transport and traffic engineering projects

Coordinate multidisciplinary project teams
-
Plan resources, budgets, and outsourcing of project work
-
Assign work and supervise engineers and technicians
Technical Engineering Work
-
Conduct and oversee:
-
Traffic Impact Assessments
-
Transport planning studies
-
Signal plan development
-
Infrastructure design checks
-

Ensure engineering work meets design standards and project specifications
Client & Business Development
-
Maintain strong client relationships
-
Conduct regular client meetings and consultations
-
Identify new business opportunities and project leads
-
Contribute to successful project bids
Reporting & Documentation

Produce high-quality technical reports and presentations
-
Ensure project documentation meets professional standards

Review and approve work completed by team members
Field Investigations & Surveys

Plan and coordinate transport surveys and investigations
-
Oversee inspections of constructed works
-
Recommend corrective actions where required
Training & Mentorship

Train and mentor junior engineers and technicians

Support development of design procedures and engineering practices
Key Performance Indicators (KPIs)

Delivery of engineering design standards

Quality and timeliness of reports and project deliverables

Minimum Requirements
Qualifications
-
BEng or BTech in Civil Engineering
-
Professional registration with Engineering Council of South Africa (ECSA)
Experience

Minimum 7 years’ relevant experience in:

Transport planning
-
Traffic engineering
-
Policy development
-
Survey design and research
-
Technical report writing and presentations
-
Technical Skills
Experience with transport modelling and engineering software such as:

ArcGIS
-
EMME
-
Transyt
-
Sidra
-
Saturn
-
Visum / Vissim
Additional knowledge in:

Transport economics and finance

Geometric road design and alignment design

Programming exposure (e.g., Python)
