Job Overview
The Free State Department of Transport is seeking an experienced Chief Artisan Grade A: Auto-Electrical to provide senior technical expertise and manage auto-electrical services across workshops, field operations, districts and technical offices.
The successful candidate will oversee maintenance, repairs, inspections and complex diagnostics involving vehicle, plant and equipment auto-electrical systems. The position also involves supervising technical personnel, managing resources, ensuring regulatory compliance, monitoring expenditure and supporting continuous technical improvement.
Minimum Requirements
Applicants must have:
- Grade 12 or equivalent qualification.
- A valid driver’s licence.
- An appropriate Trade Test Certificate (Red Seal) in Auto-Electrical.
- At least 10 years’ experience as an Artisan and/or Artisan Foreman in the relevant trade.
- Experience in:
- Vehicles
- Heavy vehicles
- Construction plant
- Earthmoving equipment
- Related technical maintenance environments
- At least 2 years’ supervisory experience.
- Ability to work in offices, workshops, districts and field/operational sites.
Added Advantage:
- A post-matric qualification.

Key Responsibilities
Technical Services & Maintenance
- Manage technical services and support across field, workshop, district and technical office activities.
- Manage and coordinate maintenance and repairs.
- Oversee inspections, complex diagnostics and technical assessments.
- Coordinate operational priorities within the auto-electrical discipline.
Quality, Safety & Compliance
- Ensure quality assurance across technical operations.
- Ensure compliance with technical, safety, statutory and regulatory requirements.
- Maintain appropriate technical standards and procedures.
People & Resource Management
- Manage Artisan Foremen, Artisans and related technical personnel.
- Manage technical resources and assets.
- Monitor staff performance and development.
- Provide senior technical advice and support.
- Manage conflict where necessary.
Financial & Operational Management
- Provide input into technical procedures, operational plans and budgets.
- Monitor expenditure and promote efficient use of resources.
- Compile technical and management reports.
Technical Development
- Maintain and advance technical expertise.
- Support continuous improvement initiatives.
- Assist with the introduction of appropriate technologies.
Stakeholder Management
- Engage formally and regularly with relevant stakeholders.
- Coordinate stakeholder meetings at technical and district levels.
- Provide technical guidance and support to stakeholders.
Ideal Candidate
The ideal candidate will be a highly experienced Auto-Electrical Artisan or Artisan Foreman with extensive experience working on vehicles, heavy vehicles, construction plant or earthmoving equipment. The role requires strong technical, supervisory, diagnostic, leadership and resource-management capabilities.
