Job Overview
The Free State Department of Transport is seeking three experienced Chief Artisan Grade A: Mechanical candidates to provide senior technical expertise and manage mechanical technical services across workshops, field operations, districts and technical offices.
The successful candidates will oversee maintenance and repairs, complex diagnostics, inspections, technical assessments and operational priorities while managing technical personnel, resources and assets. The role also involves ensuring compliance with safety and statutory requirements, managing budgets and expenditure, and providing senior technical advice.
Minimum Requirements
Applicants must have:
- Grade 12 or equivalent qualification.
- A valid driver’s licence.
- An appropriate Trade Test Certificate (Red Seal) in Diesel Mechanical.
- At least 10 years’ experience as an Artisan and/or Artisan Foreman in the relevant trade.
- Experience working with:
- Vehicles
- Heavy vehicles
- Construction plant
- Earthmoving equipment
- Related technical maintenance environments
- At least 2 years’ supervisory experience.
- Ability to work in offices, workshops, districts and field/operational sites.
Added Advantage:
- A post-matric qualification.

Key Responsibilities
The successful candidate will be responsible for:
Technical Services & Maintenance
- Manage technical services and support across field, workshop, district and technical office activities.
- Manage and coordinate maintenance, repairs and inspections.
- Oversee complex diagnostics and technical assessments.
- Coordinate operational priorities within the mechanical discipline.
Quality, Safety & Compliance
- Ensure quality assurance across technical activities.
- Ensure compliance with technical, safety, statutory and regulatory requirements.
- Maintain appropriate technical standards and processes.
People & Resource Management
- Manage Artisan Foremen, Artisans and other technical personnel.
- Manage technical resources and assets effectively.
- Monitor staff performance and development.
- Provide senior technical advice and support.
- Manage workplace conflict when required.
Financial & Operational Management
- Provide input into technical procedures, operational plans and budgets.
- Monitor expenditure and promote efficient utilisation of resources.
- Compile technical and management reports.
Technical Development & Innovation
- Maintain and advance technical expertise.
- Support continuous improvement initiatives.
- Assist with the introduction and implementation of appropriate technologies.
Stakeholder Management
- Engage formally and regularly with relevant stakeholders.
- Manage and coordinate stakeholder meetings at technical and district levels.
- Provide technical support and guidance to relevant stakeholders.
Ideal Candidate
The ideal candidate will be an experienced Diesel Mechanical Artisan or Artisan Foreman with extensive experience in vehicle, heavy-vehicle, construction plant or earthmoving equipment environments. Strong supervisory, technical, problem-solving and resource-management abilities are essential.
