Job Overview
The Free State Department of Transport is looking for three Artisan Foreman Grade A: Mechanical candidates to supervise and perform mechanical maintenance, repairs, inspections, fault diagnosis and testing of vehicles, plant and equipment.
The successful candidates will provide technical guidance to Artisans and other technical personnel, coordinate workshop and field activities, manage resources and materials, ensure compliance with safety and technical standards, and support the development of staff.
Minimum Requirements
Applicants must have:
- Grade 12 or equivalent qualification.
- A valid driver’s licence.
- An appropriate Trade Test Certificate (Red Seal) in Diesel Mechanical.
- At least 5 years’ experience as an Artisan.
- Ability to perform duties at workshops, districts and field/operational sites.

Key Responsibilities
Maintenance & Technical Operations
- Perform and/or supervise maintenance and repairs of vehicles, plant and equipment.
- Conduct inspections, fault diagnosis and testing.
- Work across workshop, district and field operations.
- Monitor maintenance activities and work in progress.
- Maintain accurate technical records.
Work Planning & Supervision
- Plan, allocate and schedule work.
- Provide technical guidance to Artisans and other technical personnel.
- Supervise technical activities and ensure work is completed according to required standards.
- Participate in technical meetings.
Quality & Safety
- Ensure quality assurance across maintenance activities.
- Ensure compliance with technical and safety standards.
- Monitor work to ensure prescribed procedures are followed.
Resources & Materials
- Plan and control required resources, equipment and materials.
- Obtain quotations where applicable.
- Initiate requirements for necessary equipment and materials.
- Ensure efficient utilisation of available resources.
Reporting & Planning
- Compile technical and operational reports.
- Provide input into operational planning.
- Monitor and maintain relevant technical documentation.
Staff Development
- Supervise, mentor and develop staff.
- Provide technical guidance and support.
- Maintain and advance technical expertise within the mechanical discipline.
Ideal Candidate
The ideal candidate will be an experienced Diesel Mechanical Artisan with at least five years’ practical experience and strong technical and supervisory capabilities.
Candidates with experience in vehicles, heavy vehicles, construction plant or earthmoving equipment will have an added advantage. Strong fault-finding, leadership, planning and problem-solving skills are essential.
