    Job Overview

    OFM is looking for a Radio News Bulletin Compiler and Reader to join its newsroom in Bloemfontein. The successful candidate will be responsible for compiling, writing and presenting radio news bulletins in both Afrikaans and English for a commercial radio audience.

    Reporting to the News Editor, the successful candidate will need strong editorial judgement, excellent knowledge of current affairs and the ability to work accurately and independently in a fast-paced newsroom environment.

    Key Responsibilities

    • Compile and write radio news bulletins for broadcast.
    • Present and read news bulletins professionally on air.
    • Source, verify and prioritise news stories independently.
    • Monitor current affairs and breaking news.
    • Set and contribute to the daily news agenda.
    • Ensure news content is accurate, relevant and suitable for OFM’s audience.
    • Edit audio for broadcast.
    • Use newsroom and broadcasting software.
    • Meet tight deadlines in a fast-paced newsroom.
    • Follow editorial direction and newsroom procedures.
    • Work independently while contributing to the wider newsroom team.
    • Take a leadership role within the newsroom when required.
    • Cover news relevant to OFM’s broadcast footprint, including the Free State, North West, southern Gauteng and Northern Cape.

    Minimum Requirements

    Candidates should have:

    • Preferably a degree or diploma in Journalism, Communications, Media Studies or a related field.
    • Experience compiling and reading radio news bulletins.
    • Preferably previous experience working in a live newsroom environment.
    • Excellent written and spoken Afrikaans and English.
    • Clear, confident and professional on-air delivery.
    • Strong knowledge of current affairs.
    • Strong commercial radio news-writing skills.
    • Excellent editorial judgement.
    • Ability to independently source, verify and prioritise stories.
    • Ability to edit audio.
    • Experience using newsroom and broadcasting software.
    • Excellent organisational skills.
    • High level of accuracy when working under pressure.
    • Ability to meet strict deadlines.
    • Ability to work independently and follow editorial direction.
    • Ability to contribute to and lead the daily news agenda when required.
    • Residence in Bloemfontein or willingness to relocate.

    Advantageous Experience

    The following will be advantageous:

    • Knowledge of media law.
    • Understanding of BCCSA requirements.
    • Familiarity with OFM’s audience and regional broadcast footprint.
    • Previous live broadcasting experience.
    • Previous breaking-news experience.
