    Purpose of the Role

    The Professional Nurse Specialised is responsible for delivering safe, comprehensive, and high-quality nursing care to patients in the Medical Intensive Care Unit (ICU). The role requires specialised clinical skills, patient monitoring, risk management, and collaboration with a multidisciplinary healthcare team to ensure optimal patient outcomes.

    Key Responsibilities

    Patient Care

    • Deliver professional nursing care according to the Scope of Practice.
    • Monitor critically ill patients in the Medical ICU.
    • Assess patient conditions and implement appropriate nursing interventions.
    • Develop and update individualised nursing care plans.
    • Ensure patient comfort, dignity, and safety at all times.

    Clinical Risk Management

    • Identify and manage clinical risks.
    • Implement infection prevention and control measures.
    • Monitor patient safety and respond to emergencies.
    • Ensure compliance with nursing standards and healthcare regulations.

    Documentation and Record Keeping

    • Maintain accurate and comprehensive patient records.
    • Document all nursing interventions and patient observations.
    • Ensure legal and professional record-keeping standards are met.

    Team Collaboration

    • Work closely with doctors, specialists, therapists, and other healthcare professionals.
    • Participate in multidisciplinary patient care planning.
    • Support continuity of care within the ICU environment.

    Training and Development

    • Create a positive learning environment.
    • Support the development of nursing staff and students.
    • Share clinical knowledge and best practices.

    Resource Management

    • Monitor and account for stock usage.
    • Ensure medical equipment is correctly utilised and charged.
    • Report equipment shortages or maintenance requirements.

    Minimum Requirements

    Essential Qualification

    • Degree or Diploma in General Nursing.

    Preferred Qualifications

    • Midwifery qualification.
    • Postgraduate Certificate or Diploma in Critical Care Nursing or a related speciality.

    Experience

    Essential

    • No minimum experience required.

    Preferred

    • One year of post-qualification experience before placement in a specialised unit such as ICU.
