     JOB DESCRIPTION

    The Scientific Technician will perform geohydrological and groundwater-related scientific work to support the management, protection, and monitoring of water resources.

    The role involves fieldwork, data analysis, research, equipment management, and technical reporting, ensuring sustainable use and protection of groundwater systems in line with South African water legislation.

    This is a specialised technical scientific role within the public service water sector.

     KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

     Geohydrological & Scientific Work

    • Conduct groundwater and geohydrological studies
    • Collect and analyse scientific field data
    • Perform technical interpretation of groundwater systems
    • Develop and apply scientific methods and models

     Research & Development

    • Participate in water-related research projects
    • Conduct literature studies and scientific investigations
    • Publish and present research findings
    • Develop improved methodologies and procedures

     Data Management & Analysis

    • Manage scientific databases and groundwater data
    • Analyse technical environmental and water resource data
    • Prepare scientific reports and proposals
    • Disseminate findings to stakeholders

     Fieldwork & Equipment Management

    • Conduct field surveys and water sampling
    • Operate, maintain, and calibrate scientific equipment
    • Expand and maintain groundwater monitoring networks

     Water Resource Management Support

    • Provide technical advice on groundwater management
    • Support implementation of the National Water Act (Act 36 of 1998)
    • Contribute to water quality and resource protection initiatives

     Stakeholder Engagement

    • Liaise with scientific bodies and councils
    • Promote awareness of water science activities
    • Build working relationships with stakeholders

     Leadership & Training

    • Mentor and train junior staff and technicians
    • Supervise technical support teams
    • Support performance management and staff development

    Minimum Requirements

    • National Diploma in:
      • Geohydrology
      • Water Science
      • Natural Sciences (related field)
    • Minimum 3 years post-qualification experience in groundwater work
    • Registration with SACNASP (Certificated Natural Scientist)
    • Valid driver’s license
