Job Description
The First Line Processing Shift Supervisor position at South African National Blood Service is responsible for supervising the daily operations of the blood processing laboratory during assigned shifts. The role ensures that blood products are processed safely, accurately, and according to regulatory and quality standards.
The supervisor oversees laboratory staff, monitors blood component processing, ensures compliance with safety and quality procedures, and supports training and development within the laboratory environment
Main Responsibilities
Laboratory Operations Supervision
- Supervise daily processing laboratory activities during shifts.
- Oversee the receipt, inspection, handling, and processing of whole blood into blood components.
- Ensure blood products are processed according to approved procedures and standards.
- Monitor product handling to maintain safety and quality.
Quality and Risk Management
- Ensure compliance with:
- ISO15189 standards
- Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP)
- SANAS requirements
- HPCSA regulations
- SANBS policies and procedures
- Maintain accurate processing and product records.
- Monitor blood storage temperatures and handling procedures to prevent contamination or product loss.
- Participate in quality improvement initiatives and risk reduction processes.
Equipment and Technical Oversight
- Ensure laboratory equipment is:
- Maintained
- Serviced
- Calibrated according to SOPs and manufacturer specifications
- Maintain maintenance and calibration records.
Staff Supervision and Training
- Supervise laboratory employees and trainees.
- Train laboratory assistants and sign off staff as competent.
- Support employee development and operational performance.
- Motivate staff to achieve operational objectives.
Communication and Customer Relations
- Communicate effectively with employees and stakeholders.
- Respond professionally to operational queries and concerns.

Minimum Requirements
Education
- Registered Medical Technologist (Blood Transfusion) with the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA)
Experience
- Minimum of 1 year blood transfusion experience
