JOB DESCRIPTION
The Industrial Relations Officer is responsible for managing and advising on all labour relations matters within the organisation.
The role focuses on ensuring compliance with South African labour laws, handling employee relations issues, managing disciplinary processes, and maintaining healthy relationships with unions and employees.
This is a legal and advisory role that supports management in making fair, compliant, and strategic workforce decisions.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Labour Relations & Advisory
- Advise management on labour laws (LRA, BCEA, EE)
- Guide disciplinary processes and procedures
- Manage grievances, appeals, and employee disputes
- Provide recommendations on workforce planning and restructuring
Legal & Compliance
- Ensure compliance with labour legislation and company policies
- Draft legal documents, agreements, and opinions
- Handle Labour Court and Labour Appeal Court matters
- Liaise with external attorneys
- Minimise legal risks and financial losses
CCMA & Dispute Resolution
- Manage CCMA and Bargaining Council cases
- Represent the company in conciliations and arbitrations
- Prepare legal documentation and case strategies
Union & Employee Relations
- Manage relationships with unions
- Handle union negotiations and wage discussions
- Address union grievances and correspondence
- Conduct employee engagement sessions
- Promote a positive workplace culture
Reporting & Administration
- Compile monthly and weekly IR reports
- Track disciplinary cases and employee relations issues
- Monitor trends and recommend corrective actions
- Ensure timely submission of Department of Labour reports
Training & Development
- Conduct IR training for management and staff
- Provide guidance on policies and procedures
- Stay updated with labour law changes
Project & Stakeholder Management
- Manage retrenchments and restructuring processes
- Coordinate consultations with employees and unions
- Support Department of Labour inspections
- Work with HR, Learning & Development, and management teams
Minimum Requirements
- Relevant degree (e.g., Labour Law, HR, Industrial Relations)
- Minimum 5 years’ relevant experience
- At least 2 years in a unionised environment
- Experience with CCMA / Bargaining Council arbitrations
- Knowledge of Labour Court processes
- Advanced MS Office skills
- Valid driver’s license and willingness to travel
