    Job Overview

    The General Worker will play a crucial role in supporting the Maintenance Team in ensuring the effective maintenance, reliability, and sustainability of equipment. The individual will also provide welding-related, fitting, electrical, and directional drilling assistance while strictly adhering to safety procedures and operational codes.

    The selected candidate will be deployed at Sasol Coal Supply, Central Workshop, Directional Drilling & Twistdraai Export Plant under the Mining division of Sasol.

    Job Responsibilities and Duties

    The General Worker will be responsible for various technical and support activities, including but not limited to:

    • Performing welding on mining equipment using the flux core method and other welding processes.
    • Ensuring safe operation of welding equipment while complying with all safety regulations.
    • Using oxy-fuel gas cutting equipment to cut and pre-heat materials, following gas safety rules.
    • Assisting with the operation of overhead cranes and lifting equipment according to safety procedures.
    • Completing job-specific tasks and checklists with accuracy.
    • Conducting visual inspections of the working environment to ensure safety standards are met and reporting any unsafe conditions.
    • Applying Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and Codes of Practice (COPs) to maintain high housekeeping standards.
    • Collaborating with team members to achieve collective operational goals.
    • Conducting hazard identification and task risk assessments before engaging in work.
    • Actively participating in daily morning meetings to discuss work assignments and team objectives.
    • Supporting the business in meeting deadlines and ensuring efficient job execution.
    • Reporting any abnormal conditions to supervisors.
    • Identifying cost-saving opportunities and ensuring cost-effective operation.
    • Assisting artisans with day-to-day tasks and responsibilities.

    Preferred Candidate Profile

    Educational Qualifications:

    • Grade 12/N3/NCV Level 4 or Equivalent Qualification
    • Mathematics & Science will be an added advantage
    • A valid driver’s license (minimum Code 08)
    • Ability to obtain a medical certificate of fitness
    • First Aid Certificate (optional but advantageous)

    Experience & Technical Knowledge Required:

    • Minimum of 12 months welding experience
    • Proficiency in using an angle grinder and cutting torch
    • Knowledge of underground mining machinery, including Shuttle Cars, Roof Bolters, Crushers, Feeders, and Feeder Breakers
    • 12 months plant experience (optional but beneficial)
    • Ability to operate MIG welding equipment (optional but beneficial)

    Functional & Technical Competencies:

    • Thorough knowledge of safety procedures and safety awareness
    • Understanding of emergency preparedness
    • Familiarity with Mine Health & Safety Act and OSHA regulations
    • Ability to interpret written instructions and work procedures
    • Adherence to SOPs and COPs for workplace safety and operational efficiency
