Job Description
The Donor Care Officer is responsible for supporting the collection of safe, quality blood and blood products in line with SANBS targets at fixed and mobile blood drives.
The successful candidate will assist with donor registration, assessment, education and care, as well as blood collection and post-donation support. The role also involves maintaining equipment, managing consumables, ensuring compliance with standard operating procedures and supporting the clinic team in delivering a safe and professional donor experience.
Responsibilities
Financial & Resource Management
- Manage cost per unit for whole blood and specialised collections.
- Prepare, pack and load consumables according to blood-drive targets.
- Maintain and validate equipment.
- Ensure equipment repairs are reported and completed timeously.
- Monitor consumable usage and report discrepancies.
Donor & Stakeholder Care
- Manage relationships with stakeholders at blood drives and donor centres.
- Welcome and guide donors through the registration process.
- Assist donors with completing relevant forms.
- Explain donor information and clarify queries.
- Address and report complaints appropriately.
- Ensure donor needs are understood and addressed.
- Coach team members on customer service.
Blood Collection & Clinical Support
- Collect whole blood and/or apheresis units according to assigned targets.
- Assist with loading and off-loading blood-drive equipment.
- Help set up blood-drive venues before donors arrive.
- Complete donor documentation and assessment procedures.
- Assist with donor identification and registration.
- Recruit and book whole blood and specialised donors.
- Conduct basic physical checks according to SANBS procedures.
- Record and report deviations or irregularities.
- Conduct confidential risk-behaviour interviews.
- Educate donors about high-risk behaviour.
- Prepare blood packs and scales to ensure the correct blood volume is collected.
- Perform phlebotomy according to relevant SOPs.
- Provide donor care, refreshments and education during donation.
- Provide first aid/CPR assistance during emergencies when required.
- Complete post-donation documentation and reports.
- Provide donors with post-donation care and advice.
Learning, Development & Governance
- Perform Clinic Supervisor duties when required by operational needs.
- Participate in staff meetings and discussions.
- Assist with identifying staff training needs.
- Support staff competency development and relevant CPD activities.
- Maintain staff and equipment files.
- Ensure relevant policies and procedures are implemented.
- Manage medical waste according to SANBS procedures.
- Maintain a safe environment and ensure safety procedures are followed.
Requirements
Education:
- Diploma or Degree in General Nursing Sciences.
- Code B or EB manual driver’s licence.
Experience:
- At least 2 years’ experience as a Registered Professional Nurse.
Knowledge:
- Knowledge of relevant SANBS policies and procedures.
- Understanding of the Standards of Practice for Blood Transfusion in South Africa.
- Knowledge of relevant clinical, operational and safety procedures.
- Ability to work according to established SOPs and healthcare standards.
