    Purpose of the Job

    As an Artisan Grade 2 Diesel Mechanic, you will support electricity generation operations by performing maintenance on 18 stationary marine-type internal combustion engines that run on natural gas and are directly coupled to generators. The position involves both scheduled maintenance and attending to breakdowns while strictly adhering to Sasol’s codes and procedures.

    You will report directly to the Mechanical Maintenance Foreman and collaborate with other mechanical artisans on-site. This is a permanent role based at the Sasol Gas Engine Power Plant (SGEPP), with no traveling or shift work required. Standby duties and occasional overtime may be necessary during major engine overhauls or plant disruptions.

    Key Responsibilities

    Functional Outputs:

    • Overhaul Wärtsilä 20V34SG gas engines per the quality control plan with a dedicated execution team.
    • Overhaul Napier 347 marine turbos with the execution team.
    • Conduct service and repairs on individual engine components according to an agreed quality control plan and schedule.
    • Perform fault-finding and repairs on engine components, gas systems, compressed air systems, and flexible couplings.
    • Replace damaged components that are beyond repair.
    • Lift and handle heavy equipment using overhead cranes.

    Job Requirements:

    • Physical fitness to lift equipment weighing up to 20 kg.
    • Valid Code B driver’s license.
    • Ability to work standby shifts and occasional overtime.
    • Familiarity with emergency procedures.
    • Basic computer literacy (MS Office knowledge).

    Education and Experience

    • Formal Education:
      • Grade 12 with Mathematics, Science, and English.
      • NQF 4 Occupational Trade Qualification – Diesel Mechanic or Diesel Fitter Red Seal (mandatory).
    • Experience:
      • Minimum of 3 years of maintenance experience, particularly with heavy construction vehicles, maritime engines, or gas engines.
