Job Overview:
Grain Field Chickens, part of the VKB Group, is seeking a Blade Minder to join its abattoir operations in Reitz. The successful candidate will be responsible for setting up, operating, and maintaining grinding machines to sharpen and shape blades in line with production requirements and quality standards. The role requires strong technical skills, attention to detail, and an understanding of safe work practices within a manufacturing or abattoir environment.
Key Responsibilities:

Set up and operate grinding or polishing machines to shape and sharpen metal blades and tools.

Select and mount grinding wheels according to required specifications using appropriate hand tools.

Adjust tools and machines to achieve precise cuts and surface finishes.

Inspect, measure, and verify finished workpieces using rulers, Vernier callipers, and gauges to ensure specifications are met.

Detect defects, assess wear, and replace or adjust blades as necessary.

Perform basic maintenance on grinding equipment, including cleaning and lubrication.

Maintain accurate records of sharpening and maintenance activities.

Conduct visual inspections of blades before and after use to ensure quality and safety standards are met.

Comply with health and safety regulations and wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE).

Assist production teams and perform additional duties as required by line management.
Minimum Requirements:

Grade 12 / NQF Level 4 Equivalent.

N2 Mechanical Engineering qualification.

Minimum 2 years’ experience in a similar blade grinding or machine operation role.

Willingness to work overtime, shifts, and weekends when required.
