The Central University of Technology (CUT) is currently seeking a qualified and experienced individual to fill the role of Additive Manufacturing (AM) Quality Engineer at the Centre for Rapid Prototyping and Manufacturing (CRPM) on the Bloemfontein Campus. This position offers a three-year fixed-term support contract, with a competitive salary and benefits package.
Main Purpose of the Job
The AM Quality Engineer is responsible for overseeing and enhancing the quality standards of CRPM’s additive manufacturing processes. The successful candidate will ensure that products meet or exceed customer specifications and regulatory requirements. The role involves collaboration with cross-functional teams to develop and implement quality controls for new and existing products, conducting root cause analysis, and driving continuous improvement within the AM process.
Key Responsibilities
The primary tasks of the Additive Manufacturing Quality Engineer include:

Quality Management System (QMS) Compliance
- Ensuring adherence to ISO standards and internal quality policies.
- Conducting internal and external audits based on quality objectives.

Product Quality Assurance and Process Validation
- Evaluating and validating the additive manufacturing process to ensure defect-free production.
- Implementing statistical process control to maintain consistency.

Risk Management and Non-Conformance Handling
- Identifying and mitigating quality risks.
- Addressing non-conformance issues and applying corrective actions.

Supplier Quality Management
- Assessing supplier performance to ensure material and component compliance.

Training and Development
- Conducting training sessions for employees on quality standards and best practices.

Continuous Improvement Initiatives
- Implementing lean manufacturing techniques and process enhancements.

Regulatory Compliance
- Ensuring compliance with ISO 13485 and other industry-related regulations.

Customer Feedback Management
- Analyzing and addressing customer concerns to improve product quality.
Minimum Qualification and Experience Requirements
Candidates must meet the following criteria:
- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical, Industrial, or Quality Engineering (NQF level 7).
- Minimum of 3 years of experience in quality engineering within manufacturing, with at least 1 year in additive manufacturing.
- Demonstrated ability to conduct ISO audits (portfolio of evidence required).
- Experience in quality management systems, statistical process control, root cause analysis, and continual improvement.
Preferred Qualifications and Additional Experience
Candidates with the following will be given preference:
- Honours degree in Mechanical, Industrial, or Quality Engineering (NQF level 8).
- More than 4 years of experience in additive manufacturing or medical device quality management.
- Extensive experience in ISO 13485 audits.
- A strong background in lean manufacturing and Six Sigma methodologies.
Remuneration and Employment Conditions
- Total Cost to Company: R605,219 per year (2025 salary scales to be confirmed).
- CUT applies an internal parity model to determine fair compensation based on qualifications and experience.
