Job Description
Main Purpose:
To develop academic material and lecture in allocated Civil Engineering subjects, while conducting research, engaging in community projects, and contributing to the overall academic and operational success of the department.
Key Responsibilities:
Teaching, Learning, and Assessment:
Deliver and assess academic content in Civil Engineering subjects at undergraduate and/or postgraduate levels.Research:
Engage in discipline-related research, publication, and academic development.Community Engagement:
Participate in outreach initiatives and provide professional services to the community.Student Evaluation:
Monitor and evaluate student progress, and contribute to curriculum development.Administration and Leadership:
Execute academic administration duties, and participate in departmental planning and management.Control and Organisation:
Maintain discipline standards and ensure academic quality assurance.
Minimum Requirements:
Option 1:
Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering (BEng, BScEng, or BEngTech Hons) – NQF Level 8
Registration as PrEng or PrTechEng with ECSA
Evidence of progress towards a Master’s degree in Civil Engineering
Minimum 3 years’ teaching/industry experience in relevant subjects
OR
Option 2:
Master’s degree in Civil Engineering (MEng, MScEng, MTech) – NQF Level 9
Registration as Candidate Engineer/Technologist, with PrEng/PrTechEng application under review
Minimum 2 years’ teaching/industry experience in relevant subjects
Technical Proficiency in One or Both Specialisations:
1. Geotechnical Engineering:
Site investigations, soil profiling, slope stability, foundation design
Proficiency in tools such as PLAXIS, GEO5 Suite, gINT, Slide, DeepEX
Knowledge of applicable SANS, SAICE, and ISSMGE codes/standards
2. Transportation Engineering:
Road design, traffic engineering, pavement modelling and design
Use of Civil 3D, Rubicon Toolbox, Civil Designer, TransCAD, PVT Visum
Familiarity with COTO, TRH, TMH16, SAPEM, SANS 1200 codes
Desired Qualifications and Experience:
Master’s degree with PrEng/PrTechEng registration if holding NQF 8
Progress toward PhD in Civil Engineering
Proven project lifecycle experience
Research and publication track record
Professional involvement in consultancies or technical committees
