Package: 70% basic salary, 30% flexible portion (Medical Aid optional)
Job Overview
The Head Clinical Unit – Orthopaedic will provide expert clinical services, manage departmental operations, oversee teaching and training, and participate in research and quality improvement initiatives at Boitumelo Regional Hospital. The role ensures safe, evidence-based patient care, efficient management of the orthopaedic department, and professional development of staff and students.
Key Responsibilities
Manage patient flow and optimize orthopaedic ward, theatre, and outpatient services
Oversee clinical outcomes to ensure safe, evidence-based care
Lead clinical governance activities, including audits, M&M reviews, and quality improvement
Strengthen medico-legal risk reduction, patient-safety measures, and compliance with National Core Standards
Provide full-time clinical service, including after-hours coverage (weekdays, weekends, public holidays)
Organize orthopaedic services within the hospital and sub-district for quality and efficiency
Supervise and mentor junior medical staff
Train undergraduate and postgraduate students, participate in academic programs
Ensure accurate record keeping and reporting to hospital management
Conduct performance appraisals, skills assessments, and staff development
Represent the province at provincial and national meetings and forums
Minimum Requirements
Matric (Grade 12)
MBChB or equivalent degree
MMed (Orthopaedics) or FC (Ortho) SA
Current HPCSA registration as a Medical Specialist in Orthopaedics for 2026/2027
South African citizen or permanent resident
Valid driver’s license
Experience Required
Minimum 3 years’ experience as a registered Orthopaedic Medical Specialist
Evidence of leadership in clinical and academic settings
Experience in teaching and examining undergraduates and postgraduates
Research experience, including publications, postgraduate supervision, or PhD
Knowledge & Skills
Knowledge of public service legislation, policies, and procedures
Medical management, written and verbal communication, and report writing skills
Clinical governance, audit, and quality improvement
Leadership and departmental management
Ability to provide evidence-based care and supervise high-risk cases
Teaching, mentorship, and academic program coordination
