Job Overview
The HEAD Clinical Specialist in Obstetrics and Gynaecology will provide expert clinical services, oversee teaching and training, manage departmental operations, and contribute to research and quality improvement. The role ensures safe, evidence-based patient care while supporting registrar and undergraduate training.
Key Responsibilities
Manage patient flow, theatre, ward, and outpatient services for safe and efficient care
Oversee clinical outcomes, ensuring safe, evidence-based care
Lead clinical governance activities, including audits, M&M reviews, and quality improvement initiatives
Strengthen medico-legal risk reduction and patient-safety measures
Supervise and mentor junior medical officers, registrars, and interns
Coordinate and deliver teaching, skills training, and assessment preparation
Participate in curriculum development, assessments, and registrar monitoring
Provide after-hours consultant support, ensuring availability for high-risk cases
Maintain proper documentation, handovers, and continuity of care
Support departmental budget planning and resource management
Conduct performance appraisals, skills assessments, and staff development initiatives
Represent the province in provincial/national forums and professional meetings
Minimum Requirements
Matric (Grade 12)
MBChB or equivalent degree
FCOG (SA) Master’s degree allowing registration with HPCSA as a Medical Specialist in Obstetrics and Gynaecology
Current HPCSA registration for 2026/2027
South African citizen or permanent resident
Valid driver’s license
Experience Required
Minimum 3 years’ experience as a registered Medical Specialist in Obstetrics and Gynaecology
Experience in departmental management and leadership
Knowledge & Skills
Knowledge of public service legislation, policies, and procedures
Strong clinical management, written, and verbal communication skills
Experience in clinical governance, audits, and quality improvement
Teaching and mentorship of undergraduates and postgraduates
Ability to manage high-risk clinical cases
Budget and resource management
