Job Overview
The University of the Free State is seeking an Associate Professor or Professor in Urban and Regional Planning to provide academic, research and postgraduate leadership within the Department of Urban and Regional Planning.
The successful candidate will contribute to teaching, curriculum development, research, postgraduate supervision, academic leadership, community engagement and departmental administration.
Key Responsibilities
- Conduct and sustain quality research in Urban and Regional Planning.
- Provide research leadership and mentorship to academic colleagues and postgraduate students.
- Teach and assess undergraduate and postgraduate students through contact, blended and online learning.
- Contribute to curriculum development, renewal and assessment.
- Provide postgraduate study leadership.
- Recruit and supervise postgraduate students.
- Pursue external research funding and collaborative research opportunities.
- Participate in community engagement initiatives.
- Contribute to departmental, faculty and university administration.
- Participate in academic leadership, quality assurance, student support and committee activities.
Requirements – Associate Professor
- PhD at NQF Level 10 in Urban and Regional Planning or a closely related field.
- Experience presenting peer-reviewed research papers at national conferences.
- Experience serving as an external examiner for postgraduate students.
- Experience as an editorial board member of high-quality national scholarly journals.
- National recognition for specialist expertise and research leadership in a specific scholarly area.
- NRF C3 rating or equivalent status.
- Experience supervising master’s students through to graduation.
- Proven publication record in accredited national and international journals.
- Membership of a national scholarly society, research committee/agency, or equivalent international organisation.
Requirements – Professor
- PhD at NQF Level 10 in Urban and Regional Planning or a closely related field.
- Experience as an external examiner for master’s and doctoral students.
- Editorial board experience with high-quality international/ISI/IBSS journals.
- International recognition for specialist expertise and research leadership.
- NRF C1 or C2 rating or equivalent status.
- Experience supervising 20 graduated master’s students and 10 PhD students.
- Experience delivering keynote addresses at national scholarly conferences.
- Membership of an international scholarly society, committee or research agency concerned with higher education.
