Job Description
The University of the Free State’s Flourishing Life Research Theme invites applications from outstanding early-career scholars for a full-time Postdoctoral Research Fellowship.
The fellowship provides an opportunity for a promising doctoral graduate to pursue an independent programme of cross-disciplinary research engaging with the Theme’s organising concept of “flourishing denied.” The Theme explores how flourishing is shaped by relational webs across the body, household, polity and living world, with its intellectual work grounded in ubuntu and the Zulu affirmation ngisazophumelela (“I will still flourish”).
The successful fellow will conduct innovative research, produce scholarly publications and contribute to the intellectual life of the Theme through seminars, symposia and public-facing writing. Some mentoring of postgraduate students may also be required.
The research should engage meaningfully with one or more of the Theme’s seven strands:
- Socioeconomic rights and the jurisprudence of becoming.
- Democratic resilience and the politics of hope.
- Feminism and the body politic.
- Ubuntu and global becoming.
- Planetary becoming and ecological flourishing.
- Flourishing in a technological age.
- Language, translation, the aesthetics of becoming.
Responsibilities
- Pursue independent and cross-disciplinary research within one or more of the Theme’s research strands.
- Develop research that meaningfully engages with the organising concept of flourishing denied.
- Produce scholarly publications arising from the research.
- Author or co-author at least two publication outputs per year in DHET-accredited scholarly journals or as books/book chapters.
- Participate actively in the Theme’s seminars, symposia and public-facing writing.
- Prepare and present research papers at seminars and other research events.
- Collaborate with the Theme’s convenor on research, administration and other relevant tasks.
- Assist with postgraduate supervision and provide mentoring where required.
- Register and reside as a postdoctoral research fellow at the University of the Free State.
- Participate in relevant activities of the Flourishing Life Research Theme.
- Conduct innovative research and contribute to the research and intellectual development of the Theme.
Requirements
Eligibility Requirements
- A Doctorate in Law, Humanities or Social Sciences, awarded within the past five years, or due to be conferred before the fellowship commences.
- A record of research and publication appropriate to the applicant’s career stage.
- A strong research proposal of three to five pages clearly demonstrating how the proposed research engages with the concerns of the Flourishing Life Research Theme.
- Demonstrated independence and discipline to complete a self-directed research programme.
- Applicants must not previously have held a permanent academic appointment, in line with national postdoctoral norms.
- Successful applicants may not hold full-time salaried employment during the fellowship.
- Applicants must be able to relocate to the University of the Free State for the duration of the fellowship.
- This is a residential fellowship based in Bloemfontein, with the successful applicant required to spend at least 60% of the postdoctoral period at UFS.
- The fellowship is open to South African and foreign nationals.
