    Role Overview: Payroll Assistant

    The Payroll Assistant will play a vital supporting role in the Payroll Department, which services over 7,000 employees across the group.     The successful candidate will be a key team player in ensuring that payroll documentation is well managed, up to date, and correctly archived. This role is essential for maintaining smooth payroll operations, supporting statutory compliance, and assisting with labour administration tasks.

    Key Responsibilities

    The Payroll Assistant’s main duties include:

    • Supporting the payroll team with document management by scanning, indexing, and archiving payroll and employee records.

    • Performing general labour administration tasks such as basic data entry and following up on employee documentation.

    • Assisting with UIF claims and processing payroll-related forms to ensure accuracy and completeness.

    • Liaising professionally with internal departments and external stakeholders to facilitate smooth communication and service delivery.

    • Helping prepare standard payroll-related reports or summaries as needed.

    • Ensuring strict adherence to deadlines and escalating any issues in a timely manner.

    • Identifying areas for process improvements and suggesting practical solutions.

    • Maintaining compliance with statutory requirements, such as the Basic Conditions of Employment Act (BCEA) and UIF regulations.

    Candidate Requirements

    To qualify for this role, candidates should meet the following criteria:

    • A minimum education level of Grade 12 or NQF Level 4.

    • Full computer literacy, particularly with Microsoft Office tools like Word, Excel, and Outlook.

    • Fluency in English, with strong reading, writing, and comprehension skills.

    • Ability to perform repetitive tasks with attention to detail and accuracy.

    • Excellent time management skills and ability to meet deadlines reliably.

    • Friendly, professional, and patient client service attitude.

    • High levels of integrity, accountability, and accuracy.

    • Knowledge of BCEA and UIF claims will be an advantage.

    • Experience with payroll systems, such as SAGE People, is a plus.

    • Additional language skills, such as Afrikaans or other official South African languages, will be beneficial.
