    Job Overview

    The Free State Department of Health is seeking a suitably qualified and experienced Operational Manager Nursing (Specialty) – PNB3: Trauma and Emergency to join Botshabelo District Hospital.

    The successful candidate will oversee and coordinate trauma and emergency nursing services, supervise nursing staff, ensure quality patient care and manage human, financial and material resources in accordance with professional nursing standards and applicable legislation.

    Minimum Requirements

    Applicants must have:

    • Senior Certificate (Grade 12).
    • A Diploma/Degree in Nursing that allows registration with the South African Nursing Council (SANC) as a Professional Nurse.
    • A 1-year post-basic Nursing qualification in Trauma and Emergency Nursing, accredited by SANC.
    • At least 9 years’ appropriate/recognisable nursing experience after registration with SANC as a Professional Nurse in General Nursing.
    • Current registration with SANC as a Professional Nurse for 2026/2027.
    • At least 5 years of the required experience must be in Trauma and Emergency Nursing, obtained after completing the 1-year post-basic Trauma and Emergency qualification.
    • Computer literacy is an added advantage.

    Knowledge & Skills

    Candidates should have:

    • Knowledge of Public Service legislation, policies and procedures.
    • Thorough knowledge of nursing care processes and procedures.
    • Knowledge of nursing statutes and relevant legal frameworks, including:
      • Nursing Act
      • National Health Act
      • Occupational Health and Safety Act
      • Patient Rights Charter
      • Batho Pele principles
    • Knowledge of HR policies, including:
      • Skills Development Act
      • Public Service Regulations
      • Labour Relations Act
      • Disciplinary Code and Procedure
      • Grievance Procedure
    • Strong leadership, management and supervisory abilities.
    • Good communication and report-writing skills.
    • Ability to manage nursing resources effectively.

    Key Responsibilities

    Nursing Care & Quality Management

    • Supervise and evaluate the quality of nursing care according to professional scope of practice and established nursing standards.
    • Ensure compliance with professional and legal requirements.
    • Implement nursing legislation and related frameworks.
    • Promote ethical nursing practices.
    • Perform duties as an Operational Manager within the applicable scope of practice.

    Resource Management

    • Manage resources effectively and efficiently within the unit.
    • Monitor the utilisation of human, financial and material resources.
    • Ensure appropriate supervision of nursing personnel.
    • Compile and analyse reports to identify opportunities for improving patient care.

    Operational Duties

    • Participate in night, weekend and public holiday shifts as required.
    • Relieve the Area Manager when required.
    • Implement and monitor the Ideal Hospital and Realisation Framework.
    • Ensure effective functioning of the trauma and emergency unit.

    Training & Research

    • Coordinate and facilitate effective training and research activities.
    • Participate in training, research and professional self-development.
    • Promote continuous improvement in nursing services.

    Communication & Stakeholder Management

    • Communicate effectively with patients, supervisors, healthcare professionals and junior colleagues.
    • Maintain constructive working relationships with nursing staff and other stakeholders.
    • Promote teamwork and collaboration within the healthcare environment.

    Salary & Benefits
