    The Environmental Engineering Superintendent is responsible for ensuring full legal compliance and maintaining safe, efficient ventilation and occupational hygiene systems across the mining operation. The role focuses on protecting employee health and safety by monitoring environmental conditions, analysing occupational risks, and implementing best-practice controls. The Superintendent also provides technical expertise on ventilation, hygiene, refrigeration and emergency preparedness systems while ensuring all statutory reporting and documentation is completed accurately and on time.

     Job Description

    Purpose of the Role

    To manage and optimise mine ventilation and occupational hygiene systems, ensuring legal and safety compliance, safeguarding employee health, and supporting a safe, productive mining environment.

     Key Responsibilities

    Compliance & Safety Management

    • Ensure compliance with all relevant mining, environmental, and occupational health legislation and standards.

    • Monitor and report on ventilation and occupational hygiene systems to ensure they meet statutory requirements.

    • Conduct routine audits, compliance checks, surveys, and risk assessments.

    Ventilation & Occupational Hygiene

    • Maintain and update statutory ventilation, refrigeration, and emergency plans.

    • Provide technical expertise on ventilation engineering and occupational hygiene issues.

    • Analyse data to identify trends, gaps, and deviations, and recommend corrective or preventive measures.

    Emergency Preparedness

    • Support and improve emergency preparedness and fire prevention programmes.

    • Ensure emergency plans are always up to date and compliant with regulations.

    Reporting & Documentation

    • Prepare and submit daily, weekly, monthly, and annual environmental/ventilation reports.

    • Assist in developing, implementing and improving management systems, procedures and best practices.

    Continuous Improvement

    • Implement and review systems and databases related to environmental engineering.

    • Identify optimisation opportunities and drive continual improvements in ventilation and hygiene management.

     Minimum Requirements

    • Grade 12 (Matric)

    • Degree or Diploma in Occupational Hygiene or equivalent

    • Intermediate Certificate in Mine Environmental Control

    • SAIOH registration as an Occupational Hygienist

    • Minimum 3 years’ supervisory experience

    • Experience with management systems, databases and reporting structures

    • Valid driver’s licence
