Programme Purpose
The Nedbank External Bursary Programme aims to support academically deserving students who demonstrate financial need and wish to pursue their first undergraduate or honours qualification at a South African public university or university of technology.
The bursary seeks to address South Africa’s critical skills shortage with a particular emphasis on STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) and Green Economy fields—areas that promote environmental sustainability, social well-being, and inclusive economic growth.
Through this initiative, Nedbank continues to use its financial expertise to do good, empowering young leaders to achieve their academic dreams and contribute to a sustainable future.

Eligibility Criteria

Citizenship: Must be a South African citizen.

Financial Need: Must demonstrate proven financial need as determined by household income.

Academic Performance:

Minimum average of 65% in the most recent academic year (Grade 12 or university).

Minimum 65% average in required subjects relevant to the chosen qualification.

Mathematics Requirement:

Applicants who completed Grade 12 with Mathematical Literacy will not be considered.

Must have secured admission to a South African public university or university of technology for the intended Undergraduate or Honours qualification.

Grade 11 final and Grade 12 mid-year results (if in Grade 12).

Grade 12 final and current university mid-year results (if in 1st year).

Most recent full-year and current mid-year university results (if in 2nd or 3rd year).

Parents, legal guardians, and all income-earning household members must provide:

Written Consent allowing Nedbank to verify income details.

Completed Income and Expenditure Statement for the household.

ID documents.

Recent payslips or letters of employment (not older than 3 months).

Proof of income for informal traders/hawkers (e.g., municipal bills or statements).

IRP5, IT3, or IT12 forms (past 2 years) if earning commission only.

Pension/grant/rental/investment income proof (latest 3 months).

Latest three months’ bank statements for parents/guardians and applicant.
