Programme Purpose

The Nedbank External Bursary Programme aims to support academically deserving students who demonstrate financial need and wish to pursue their first undergraduate or honours qualification at a South African public university or university of technology.

The bursary seeks to address South Africa’s critical skills shortage with a particular emphasis on STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) and Green Economy fields—areas that promote environmental sustainability, social well-being, and inclusive economic growth.

Through this initiative, Nedbank continues to use its financial expertise to do good, empowering young leaders to achieve their academic dreams and contribute to a sustainable future.

Fields of Study Supported

The bursary prioritises students pursuing qualifications in:

• Science and Technology

• Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) disciplines

• Green Economy–related fields, such as:

  • Environmental Management

  • Renewable Energy

  • Sustainable Development

  • Climate Science and Resource Efficiency

Eligibility Criteria

1. Citizenship: Must be a South African citizen.

2. Financial Need: Must demonstrate proven financial need as determined by household income.

3. Academic Performance:

   • Minimum average of 65% in the most recent academic year (Grade 12 or university).

   • Minimum 65% average in required subjects relevant to the chosen qualification.

4. Mathematics Requirement:

   • Applicants who completed Grade 12 with Mathematical Literacy will not be considered.

5. University Admission:

   • Must have secured admission to a South African public university or university of technology for the intended Undergraduate or Honours qualification.

Required Supporting Documents

1. Certified Copy of South African ID.

2. Academic Records:

   • Grade 11 final and Grade 12 mid-year results (if in Grade 12).

   • Grade 12 final and current university mid-year results (if in 1st year).

   • Most recent full-year and current mid-year university results (if in 2nd or 3rd year).

3. Financial Checks Affidavit, signed by:

   • Applicant

   • Parent(s)/Guardian(s)

Household Supporting Documents (for Shortlisted Applicants)

Parents, legal guardians, and all income-earning household members must provide:

1. Written Consent allowing Nedbank to verify income details.

2. Completed Income and Expenditure Statement for the household.

3. Certified Copies (within seven working days):

   • ID documents.

   • Recent payslips or letters of employment (not older than 3 months).

   • Proof of income for informal traders/hawkers (e.g., municipal bills or statements).

   • IRP5, IT3, or IT12 forms (past 2 years) if earning commission only.

   • Pension/grant/rental/investment income proof (latest 3 months).

   • Latest three months’ bank statements for parents/guardians and applicant.

Selection Process

1. Applications are accepted only via the official online platform.

2. Incomplete applications will be disqualified.

3. All applications are screened and shortlisted based on the eligibility criteria.

4. Shortlisted applicants will undergo:

   • Psychometric assessments

   • Virtual interviews

5. Final awards are made at the sole discretion of the Nedbank Educational Trust.

6. All applicants will receive feedback upon completion of the recruitment process.
