Job Overview
The Medical Sub-Specialist in Internal Medicine (Clinical Haematology) will provide expert clinical care for inpatients and outpatients, oversee specialised therapies and procedures, mentor students and registrars, conduct research, and support departmental administrative duties. The role includes clinical oversight in peripheral healthcare facilities and contributes to training programs for healthcare providers.
Key Responsibilities
Provide inpatient care for clinical haematology patients
Conduct outpatient follow-ups
Supervise interns, registrars, medical officers, and fellows
Plan and oversee specialised therapies, including:
Chemotherapy
Apharesis
Immunotherapy
Haematopoietic stem cell transplantation
Perform and oversee clinical haematology procedures:
Bone marrow aspiration/biopsy
Lumbar puncture
Line insertions
Teach medical students, registrars, and subspecialty fellows through lectures, bedside teaching, and exams
Supervise research projects and dissertations (MMed, MPhil)
Conduct original clinical research within the division
Provide guidance and oversight to peripheral healthcare facilities (e.g., Lesotho, Northern Cape, Free State)
Conduct outreach and remote training sessions for healthcare providers
Assist the Head of Clinical Unit and Department of Internal Medicine with administrative duties
Serve on departmental committees
Minimum Requirements
Matric (Grade 12)
Appropriate qualification allowing registration with HPCSA as a Medical Specialist in Internal Medicine (Clinical Haematology)
Current HPCSA registration for 2026/2027
Certified service record as a Medical Specialist
South African citizen or permanent resident
Experience Required
Grade 1: No post-registration experience required
Grade 2: Minimum 5 years post-registration experience
Grade 3: Minimum 10 years post-registration experience
Experience in teaching, research, and clinical sub-specialty care in haematology
Knowledge & Skills
Knowledge of public service legislation, policies, and procedures
Clinical governance, patient safety, and evidence-based care
Strong teaching and mentoring skills for undergraduate, postgraduate, and subspecialty trainees
Excellent time management, written and verbal communication, and report writing
Strong interpersonal skills, integrity, and professional ethics
