Job Overview
The University of the Free State is looking for a qualified and experienced Lecturer in Comparative Education to join the Faculty of Education. The successful candidate will contribute to undergraduate and postgraduate teaching, research, curriculum development and student supervision, with a particular focus on Comparative Education.
The role also provides an opportunity to contribute to the Faculty’s Education Management and Leadership and Teacher Education programmes, as well as its Work Integrated Learning and research activities.
Key Responsibilities
The successful candidate will be responsible for:
- Teaching undergraduate and postgraduate modules in Comparative Education, Education Management and Leadership, and Teacher Education.
- Participating in the Faculty’s Work Integrated Learning (Teaching Practice) programme.
- Conducting research and producing research outputs in accredited journals and other relevant publications.
- Contributing to curriculum development, particularly in Comparative Education.
- Supervising undergraduate and postgraduate students.
- Providing consultation sessions and academic support to students.
- Collaborating with colleagues within the Faculty.
- Participating in leadership and administrative responsibilities within the Faculty.
Minimum Requirements
For a permanent appointment, candidates must have:
- A relevant Doctoral Degree (NQF Level 10) with a focus on Comparative Education.
Alternatively, candidates may have:
- A Master’s Degree (NQF Level 9) with a focus on Comparative Education. This would be a five-year contract appointment, during which the candidate must obtain a relevant doctoral degree at NQF Level 10 with a focus on Comparative Education to qualify for conversion to permanent employment.
Candidates must also:
- Submit proof of registration for a doctoral degree with a focus on Comparative Education.
- Provide an abstract of their thesis or dissertation demonstrating its relevance to Comparative Education.
- Hold a formal teaching qualification, such as an Advanced Diploma in Education, Bachelor of Education or equivalent.
- Have at least five years’ relevant working experience in a school environment, or at least two years’ experience in higher education or research and development.
- Provide evidence of manuscript(s) that have the potential to be converted into or submitted for publication, preferably in an accredited journal.
- Demonstrate experience delivering poster or oral presentations at conferences or equivalent academic activities.
Recommended Requirements
The following will be advantageous:
- Membership or registration with a relevant professional body.
- Membership of a national or international scholarly society or committee.
- A proven research publication record in Q1–Q4 accredited national or international journals.
- Experience in postgraduate supervision.
