Main Purpose of the Job:
The Laboratory Assistant provides essential technical support within the Kroonstad Veterinary Laboratory. This entry-level role involves sample preparation, basic testing, laboratory maintenance, and animal care duties under the supervision of senior personnel. The position is critical in ensuring that laboratory procedures are conducted efficiently, safely, and in accordance with health and diagnostic protocols.
Key Responsibilities:
1. Sample Preparation & Handling:

Label and organize incoming samples
-
Collect, weigh, dry, and prepare material such as blood, water, soil, and tissue for analysis

Prepare media, smears, stains, buffers, and reagents
-
Store and transport samples appropriately
-
Assist in safe disposal and decontamination of used materials
2. Laboratory Testing Support:
-
Perform visual inspections and extractions for testing under supervision
-
Assist in isolating bacteria and conducting confirmatory diagnostic tests
-
Support the identification of bacteria, parasites, and other pathogens
-
Record and report test results accurately
3. Equipment & Facility Maintenance:
-
Clean and sterilize laboratory glassware and instruments
-
Perform basic maintenance on selected equipment
-
Report faulty equipment and maintain lab tidiness
4. Animal Care Support (if applicable):
-
Provide basic daily care for laboratory animals, including cleaning water troughs
-
Monitor animal health and report illnesses or deaths
-
Assist in transporting or moving animals between locations
-
Support post-mortem processes as required
5. Administrative Tasks:

Maintain inventory records of laboratory equipment and consumables
-
Keep registers and logbooks updated (e.g., sample referral and receipt logs)

Assist with processing invoices for lab analyses
-
Ensure compliance with occupational health and safety regulations
Minimum Requirements:
-
Education: Grade 12 (Matric) or equivalent qualification
-
Experience: No prior experience required – this is an excellent opportunity for school leavers or individuals seeking entry into the veterinary science and laboratory field

Other Requirements: Willingness to learn and follow detailed laboratory protocols
