Job Description
The Assistant Director: Labour Relations is responsible for supporting the development and implementation of labour relations policies, advising management, and representing the department in labour-related matters.
The role also includes supervising staff, managing resources, and ensuring effective administration of labour relations processes.
Key Responsibilities
Labour Relations & Advisory
Assist in developing labour relations policies
Advise management on labour relations matters
Promote fair labour practices and compliance
Case Management
Conduct investigations into misconduct cases
Handle grievances and disputes
Manage conciliation and arbitration processes
Stakeholder Engagement
Represent the department in discussions with labour unions
Participate in bilateral engagements with organised labour
Administration & Management
Perform and manage administrative functions
Supervise staff and ensure quality of work
Manage resources to achieve departmental objectives
Support staff development
Minimum Requirements
National Diploma (NQF Level 6) in Labour Relations or equivalent (recognized by SAQA)
3–4 years’ experience in:
Misconduct investigations
Grievance handling
Conciliation and arbitration
Valid driver’s license
Knowledge Required
Labour Relations Act (Act 66 of 1995)
Collective Agreements
Public Service Act and Regulations
DPSA guidelines
Departmental legislation and prescripts
Processes of CCMA, PSCBC, and GPSSBC
Policy and agreement interpretation
Key Competencies
Strong analytical and investigation skills
Ability to interpret policies and legislation
Good communication and negotiation skills
Leadership and supervisory ability
Planning and organisational skills
Ability to work under pressure and extended hours
Willingness to travel
