Job Description
The University of the Free State is seeking a Lecturer to join the Department of Computer Science and Informatics within the Faculty of Natural and Agricultural Sciences.
The successful candidate will be responsible for teaching undergraduate and postgraduate Computer Science modules, supervising honours and co-supervising master’s students, conducting research and contributing to accredited research publications. The role will also involve curriculum development, community engagement and general university administration.
Candidates with expertise in areas such as Human-Computer Interaction and Extended Reality, Machine Learning or Computer Science Education are encouraged to apply.
Responsibilities
- Teach undergraduate and postgraduate modules in Computer Science.
- Supervise Honours students and co-supervise Master’s students in Computer Science.
- Conduct research in at least one of the department’s established research areas:
- Human-Computer Interaction and Extended Reality.
- Machine Learning.
- Computer Science Education.
- Publish research outputs in accredited national peer-reviewed journals.
- Contribute to curriculum development within the department.
- Participate in community engagement activities.
- Perform general administrative duties at university level.
- Deliver poster or oral presentations at conferences or participate in equivalent academic activities.
- Produce research manuscripts with potential for submission or conversion to publications in accredited journals.
Requirements
Inherent Requirements
For a permanent appointment:
- A Doctoral degree on NQF Level 10 in Computer Science or Information Systems.
OR
For a contract appointment:
- A Master’s degree on NQF Level 9 in Computer Science and Informatics or a related discipline.
- The successful candidate must obtain a PhD on NQF Level 10 in Computer Science, Information Systems or a related discipline within five years to qualify for conversion to a permanent appointment.
Applicants must also have:
- Proven experience delivering poster or oral presentations at conferences or equivalent academic activities.
- Evidence of manuscripts produced that have the potential to be converted or submitted for publication in accredited journals.
- Experience lecturing at undergraduate level.
- A good academic record, with a copy attached to the application.
Recommended Requirements
- A Doctoral degree in Computer Science or Information Systems, or registration for a Doctoral degree in one of these fields.
- Specialisation in Software Development and/or Mobile App Development.
- Ability to teach undergraduate and postgraduate modules in Information Systems, Computer Science and Software Engineering.
- A record of research outputs.
