    Job Description

    The Free State Department of Health is seeking a qualified Paramedic to provide effective pre-hospital emergency care and rescue services within the applicable scope of practice.

    The successful candidate will respond to emergency calls, assess and treat patients, provide safe transportation to medical facilities, maintain emergency vehicles and equipment, complete required documentation and communicate effectively with patients, colleagues, control centres and other service providers.

    Minimum Requirements

    Applicants must have:

    • Senior Certificate / Grade 12.
    • Successfully completed a Critical Care Assistant (CCA) programme.
    • Current HPCSA registration as a Paramedic for 2026/2027.
    • Knowledge of the CCA / NDIP / ECP scope of practice.
    • Valid Code 10 (C1) driver’s licence.
    • Valid Professional Driving Permit (PrDP).

    Experience Requirements

    Grade 1

    • No experience required after registration with HPCSA as a CCA Paramedic.

    Grade 2

    • 7 years’ experience after registration with HPCSA as a CCA Paramedic; or
    • Relevant experience after registration with HPCSA as a Paramedic with a National Diploma.

    Grade 3

    • 14 years’ experience after registration with HPCSA as a CCA Paramedic.
    • 7 years’ experience after registration with HPCSA as a Paramedic with a National Diploma.
    • No experience required for registered ECP candidates.

    Grade 4

    • 24 years’ experience after registration with HPCSA as a CCA Paramedic.
    • 17 years’ experience after registration as a Paramedic.
    • 10 years’ experience after registration as an ECP.

    Knowledge and Skills

    Candidates should demonstrate:

    • Ability to provide emergency care and rescue procedures within their scope of practice.
    • Knowledge of emergency plans.
    • Knowledge of emergency circulars and policies.
    • Knowledge of the Emergency Care scope of practice.
    • Ability to work under pressure and for extended hours.
    • Physical and mental fitness.
    • Computer literacy.
    • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
    • Knowledge of the Free State Province.

    Key Responsibilities

    Emergency Care

    • Provide effective pre-hospital emergency care services.
    • Respond to emergency calls.
    • Assess, treat and transport patients according to established protocols.
    • Ensure safe delivery of patients to medical facilities.
    • Request additional support when required.
    • Conduct inter-hospital transfers when necessary.
    • Complete Declaration of Death forms according to Standard Operating Procedures.

    Vehicle & Equipment Management

    • Inspect the allocated emergency vehicle and equipment.
    • Complete required checklists.
    • Maintain emergency vehicles and equipment in good working order.
    • Clean vehicles and equipment using appropriate detergents.
    • Report losses, damage, discrepancies and deficiencies.
    • Replace and replenish surgical supplies and medical gases.
    • Assist in keeping the EMS base clean and tidy.

    Administration & Communication

    • Complete patient report forms and log sheets.
    • Communicate with the Control Centre.
    • Complete required administrative duties.
    • Submit all relevant paperwork to the Shift Leader before the end of the shift.
    • Communicate effectively with patients, colleagues, service providers and members of the public.

    Professional Development

    • Participate in in-service training.
    • Attend refresher courses.
    • Perform overtime when required.
    • Manage EMS assets during assigned shifts.
