JOB DESCRIPTION
The Zone Controller is responsible for managing and coordinating courier operations within a specific zone. This includes ensuring that all deliveries and collections are completed on time, maintaining service quality, and supervising courier teams and vehicles.
The role focuses heavily on:
- Operational control of courier routes
- Staff supervision and performance management
- Vehicle and cargo safety
- Ensuring timely collections and deliveries
- Maintaining communication between teams and supervisors
It is a hands-on leadership role in logistics operations.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Courier Operations & Deliveries
- Ensure on-time collections by couriers
- Monitor and recheck shipment sorting
- Ensure couriers leave stations on time
- Manage run-sheets, scanners, and delivery documentation
- Track and report delivery performance
2. Collections Management
- Generate and manage collection sheets
- Ensure proper allocation and completion of collections
- Reschedule missed or incorrect collections
- Scan and verify all collected shipments
- Report daily collection statistics
3. Vehicle Management
- Check cleanliness and condition of vehicles
- Ensure vehicles are properly equipped (documents, tools, etc.)
- Monitor accident reporting and documentation
- Ensure radios and communication tools are functional
4. Staff Management
- Monitor attendance, punctuality, and discipline
- Handle leave and sick documentation
- Conduct performance monitoring and appraisals support
- Provide coaching, counselling, and support to staff
- Decide on skeleton staffing when needed
5. Security & Risk Control
- Ensure safety of couriers, vehicles, and cargo
- Monitor high-value or sensitive routes
- Ensure proper scanning and accountability of shipments
- Manage missing, damaged, or incorrect deliveries
- Maintain security procedures at all times
6. Reporting & Administration
- Follow up on outstanding PODs, invoices, and documents
- Track delivery issues and queries
- Provide feedback on route optimisation
- Communicate operational issues to senior supervisors
7. Operational Discipline
- Ensure service level agreements (SLAs) are met
- Enforce procedures and compliance standards
- Ensure smooth end-of-day operations before leaving base
REQUIREMENTS
Education
- Matric (Grade 12) or equivalent qualification
Experience
- Minimum 3 years experience as a ground courier
- At least 1 year experience in logistics industry
Licensing
- Valid Code 10 Driver’s License
- Valid PDP (Public Driver’s Permit)
Technical Skills
- Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook)
- Basic computer proficiency
