Job Overview
The Speech Therapist provides assessment, treatment, and rehabilitation for patients with speech, language, and communication disorders. This role includes conducting examinations, developing therapy programs, coordinating services, and promoting Speech Therapy within the hospital.
The position is suitable for early-career to highly experienced practitioners depending on the grade.
Job Description
Speech Therapists assess patients with speech or communication difficulties, provide rehabilitation programs, make referrals, and monitor progress. They also coordinate therapy services, supervise equipment and consumables, and ensure multidisciplinary collaboration.
Key Responsibilities
Clinical Assessment & Therapy
Examine patients with speech and communication problems using tests and special equipment
Compile assessment reports and make referrals as needed
Provide rehabilitation programs including counselling and guidance
Assess patients with conditions like cleft palate, delayed speech, language development delays, or neurological disorders
Patient Follow-up & Monitoring
Conduct follow-up consultations to monitor patient progress
Assess and treat patients whose speech or language has been affected by surgery, disease, or brain injury
Service Promotion & Administration
Coordinate and promote Speech Therapy services within the hospital
Safeguard and manage all consumables and equipment
Ensure multidisciplinary teamwork and collaboration
Minimum Requirements
Qualifications & Registration
Grade 12
Appropriate qualification in Speech Therapy or Speech Therapy & Audiology recognized by SAQA
Current registration with HPCSA as an Independent Speech Therapy Practitioner or Speech Therapy & Audiology (2026/2027)
Valid driver’s license
Experience
Grade 1: No experience post-registration
Grade 2: Minimum 10 years post-registration experience
Grade 3: Minimum 20 years post-registration experience
Knowledge & Skills
Good knowledge of clinical theory, practice, and ethics in Speech Therapy
Computer literacy
Ability to work in a multidisciplinary team
Strong verbal and written communication skills
