    Job Overview

    The University of the Free State is seeking a passionate and qualified Lecturer in Creative Writing to join the Department of African Languages. The successful candidate will be responsible for teaching undergraduate and postgraduate students, developing creative writing curricula, conducting research, participating in community engagement initiatives, and contributing to the academic leadership of the department.

    This role is ideal for an academic with expertise in African Languages and Creative Writing who is committed to excellence in teaching, research, and student development.

    Key Responsibilities

    The successful candidate will:

    • Teach undergraduate and postgraduate courses in African Languages Creative Writing.
    • Develop and design study material for undergraduate and postgraduate programmes.
    • Contribute to curriculum development in Creative Writing programmes.
    • Supervise and support students in academic and creative development.
    • Participate in community engagement and engaged scholarship initiatives.
    • Collaborate with colleagues within the department and faculty.
    • Perform general academic leadership and administrative duties within the Department of African Languages.
    • Contribute to research and scholarly activities within the discipline.

    Minimum Requirements

    Permanent Appointment

    Applicants must have:

    • A PhD (NQF Level 10) in African Languages with a specialisation in Creative Writing or a closely related discipline.
    • Proven experience delivering poster or oral presentations at conferences or similar academic events.
    • Evidence of research manuscripts with publication potential in accredited journals.
    • A strong academic record (copy must be attached).

    Contract Appointment (Five Years)

    Applicants may also qualify if they have:

    • A Master’s degree (NQF Level 9) in African Languages with a specialisation in Creative Writing or a closely related discipline.
    • A commitment to obtaining a PhD within five years to qualify for permanent appointment.
    • Proven conference presentation experience.
    • Evidence of research manuscripts suitable for publication.
    • A strong academic record.

    Recommended Experience

    Preference will be given to candidates with:

    • Experience mentoring students in creative writing and creative material production.
    • Academic teaching and research experience in Creative Writing or African Languages.
