    Responsibilities:
    The Assistant Director: Special Programmes, based in the Office of the MEC for Education, will play a vital role in supporting the implementation and coordination of special programmes that focus on transformation, inclusion, and social justice within the Department of Education. This role is integral to driving the department’s objectives relating to gender equity, youth development, disability inclusion, and the promotion of children’s rights and public service excellence.

    Key responsibilities include:

    • Supporting the Office of the MEC in the design, execution, and monitoring of special programmes and related initiatives

    • Developing and facilitating the implementation of departmental policies and programmes that promote the rights and empowerment of vulnerable groups including women, youth, people with disabilities, and children

    • Providing guidance and assistance to line-functionaries to ensure effective implementation of departmental mandates related to Gender, Youth, Disability, and Children’s Rights, as well as compliance with the White Paper on Batho Pele

    • Coordinating, promoting, and implementing activities that enhance awareness and participation in special programmes across all levels of the education sector, from provincial to school level

    • Ensuring the establishment and ongoing functionality of Quality Learning and Teaching Campaign (QLTC) structures across the Province, Districts, Circuits, and individual Schools

    • Planning and managing events aligned with National Importance Days, such as Youth Day, Women’s Month, International Day of Persons with Disabilities, and others to ensure they are properly commemorated within the department

    • Providing technical advice and strategic input on special programme-related issues to senior management, helping to shape a more inclusive and responsive education system

    • Facilitating meaningful engagement and partnerships with both internal stakeholders (within the Department) and external stakeholders (other government departments, civil society, community groups, and national bodies)

    • Acting as a liaison on matters concerning transformation and inclusivity, ensuring that the department’s vision is translated into practice through proactive communication and programme coordination

    • Coordinating activities and programmes related to the Moral Regeneration Movement, promoting ethical leadership, integrity, and social cohesion in collaboration with stakeholders and departmental units

    This role requires a committed individual who can work independently and collaboratively, and who has a passion for social development, education, and public service transformation.

    Qualifications:

    • A recognised Degree or 3-year Diploma (or equivalent qualification)

    • A minimum of three years’ experience in a related role post-qualification

    • Proven experience working on programmes related to youth, gender, disability, transformation, or community engagement within the public sector or a similar environment

    • Proficiency in computer applications

    • A valid South African driver’s license is required
