Job Description
CHEP is looking for a skilled Maintenance Technician to maintain, troubleshoot, repair and improve electrical, mechanical and automated plant equipment at its Bloemfontein operation.
The successful candidate will be responsible for minimising equipment downtime, performing preventative and corrective maintenance, supporting the installation and commissioning of new machinery, and ensuring that all maintenance activities comply with safety and operational standards.
The role also involves providing technical support to operators, contractors and internal teams while contributing to continuous improvement across the site.
Responsibilities
The Maintenance Technician will be responsible for:
- Performing hands-on fault diagnosis and repairs on plant equipment.
- Maintaining and repairing machinery while minimising operational downtime.
- Executing preventative and corrective maintenance activities.
- Conducting electrical, mechanical and automation fault finding.
- Inspecting machinery and equipment regularly.
- Supporting the installation, commissioning and optimisation of new equipment.
- Providing technical expertise during equipment installation and acceptance testing.
- Working with internal teams and external contractors to schedule maintenance activities.
- Managing and sourcing maintenance spares and equipment.
- Maintaining adequate spare-parts inventory.
- Recording maintenance activities, repairs, downtime and job-card information.
- Leading and managing capital projects where required.
- Coordinating contractors and monitoring project schedules and expenditure.
- Ensuring compliance with health and safety regulations, statutory requirements and company standards.
- Promoting a strong zero-harm and safety culture.
- Coaching and supporting operators to improve their technical capabilities.
- Identifying opportunities to improve safety, cost efficiency, product quality and service delivery.
- Supporting continuous improvement through best maintenance practices and process optimisation.
Essential Requirements
Candidates must have:
- Qualified Millwright status.
- N4–N6 qualification in Electrical and/or Mechanical Engineering.
- At least 5 years’ maintenance experience in an industrial environment.
- Strong electrical fault-finding expertise.
- Experience with PLCs and automation.
- Strong diagnostic and problem-solving abilities.
Highly Desirable Experience
The following will be advantageous:
- Allen-Bradley PLC experience.
- Experience with robotics and automated machinery.
- Hydraulic systems experience.
- Pneumatic systems experience.
- Variable Speed Drive (VSD) experience.
- PILZ Safety Systems experience.
- Fortress Interlocks/Locks experience.
- Experience in highly automated manufacturing environments.
