Job Description
The University of the Free State is looking for dedicated and hardworking Cleaners to maintain cleanliness and hygiene in student residences and accommodation facilities within the Department of Housing and Residence Affairs.
The Cleaner will be responsible for ensuring that university residences, bathrooms, and surrounding areas remain clean, safe, and well-organised at all times. Duties include cleaning rooms and restrooms, using the All-Care Colour Coding Cleaning System correctly, handling cleaning equipment responsibly, and assisting during university conferences by preparing rooms, making beds, and removing linen after events.
The role also requires employees to work overtime when necessary, especially during conference periods or busy operational times. Candidates must be able to follow instructions, work well under supervision, maintain high cleanliness standards, and cooperate effectively with colleagues and students.
The position suits individuals who are reliable, detail-oriented, physically fit, and capable of working in a fast-paced environment while maintaining professionalism and good hygiene practices
Main Duties and Responsibilities
Successful candidates will be responsible for:
- Cleaning university residences and accommodation facilities.
- Cleaning according to the All-Care Colour Coding System.
- Maintaining and taking care of cleaning equipment issued by the university.
- Cleaning bathrooms and restroom facilities.
- Assisting during conferences, including:
- Making beds
- Removing linen after conferences
- Working overtime when required, especially during conference periods.
Minimum Requirements
Applicants must have:
- At least Grade 10 (NQF Level 2).
- Proof of qualification must be attached.
Recommended Experience and Skills
The university prefers candidates with:
- Minimum 2 years’ experience using a colour-coded cleaning system.
- A Colour Coding Cleaning System Certificate.
- Experience cleaning in a tertiary institution or student residence environment.
