Job Description
The successful candidate will contribute to teaching, research, curriculum development, and academic administration within the School of Accountancy. The role focuses on developing future accounting professionals while contributing to scholarly research and maintaining relationships with professional accounting bodies and industry stakeholders.
Key Responsibilities
Teaching and Learning
- Teach, coordinate, and assess modules in:
- Financial Accounting
- Managerial Accounting and Finance
- Taxation
- Auditing
- Facilitate undergraduate and postgraduate learning.
- Develop students’ digital skills and graduate attributes.
- Advance innovative teaching and learning practices.
Curriculum Development
- Contribute to curriculum design and improvement.
- Ensure programmes align with professional accounting body requirements, including SAICA competency frameworks.
- Adapt curriculum to meet changing industry and workplace demands.
Research
- Conduct scholarly research.
- Publish in accredited and quality academic journals.
- Present research at conferences, seminars, workshops, and colloquia.
- Build collaborations within the research community and accounting profession.
Administration and Stakeholder Engagement
- Perform administrative duties within the School of Accountancy.
- Develop and maintain partnerships with professional bodies and industry stakeholders.
Additional Responsibilities for Senior Lecturer
- Provide academic leadership within the School.
- Participate in quality assurance activities.
- Supervise Honours, Master’s, and PhD students.
- Mentor junior academic staff.
- Support staff development and academic excellence.
Additional Responsibilities for Associate Professor
- Provide academic leadership within the Faculty and broader university community.
- Supervise postgraduate research students.
- Mentor junior academics.
- Maintain a strong publication record.
- Contribute to faculty research strategy and academic development initiatives.
Requirements
Lecturer Requirements
Applicants must have either:
Option 1
- Master’s degree (NQF Level 9) in Accountancy or a related discipline based on:
- BCom Honours Accounting,
- BAccounting Honours, or
- another SAICA-endorsed NQF Level 8 qualification.
OR
Option 2
- Chartered Accountant (SA) [CA(SA)] designation.
- Relevant NQF Level 8 qualification in Accountancy or a related discipline.
Additional Requirement
- Strong academic record from first-year studies through to highest qualification.
Senior Lecturer Requirements
Applicants must have either:
Option 1
- Relevant PhD (NQF Level 10) in Accountancy or related field.
OR
Option 2
- CA(SA) designation.
- Master’s degree (NQF Level 9) in Accountancy or related discipline.
Plus
- Strong academic record.
- Proven teaching experience in accountancy.
- Quality scholarly publications or technical reports.
- Demonstrated contribution to knowledge advancement.
- Successful supervision of Honours and/or Master’s students.
Associate Professor Requirements
- Relevant PhD (NQF Level 10).
- CA(SA) designation.
- NRF rating or equivalent.
- Successful supervision of Master’s and PhD students.
- Strong academic leadership experience.
- Proven teaching success in accountancy.
- Significant scholarly publication record.
- Demonstrated contribution to the advancement of knowledge.
Recommended Qualifications and Experience
For All Levels
- Practical experience in Accounting, Auditing, Taxation, or Finance.
- Recent lecturing experience at a higher education institution.
- Membership of relevant professional accounting bodies.
- Record of scholarly publications.
Additional for Senior Lecturer and Associate Professor
- Leadership and management experience.
- Willingness to serve on management and research committees.
- Active research agenda.
- Ability to secure research funding and partnerships.
