Fellowship Purpose
Conduct advanced research in Animal Science with a focus on Animal Breeding, Molecular Genetics, Quantitative Genetics, and Rumen Microbiome Dynamics. Gain research and innovation experience under the mentorship of established researchers. Develop an independent research profile and contribute to scientific knowledge through high-quality publications and funded research. Prepare for an academic or professional career in animal breeding and genetics.
Research Areas
The successful fellow will conduct innovative research in one or more of the following areas:
- Estimation of genetic parameters in livestock.
- Genome-Wide Association Studies (GWAS).
- Genetic marker analysis.
- Rumen microbiome diversity analysis.
- Animal production trials.
- Molecular genetics.
- Quantitative genetics.
Key Responsibilities
- Conduct high-quality and innovative research in Animal Science.
- Publish or co-publish at least three (3) DHET-accredited scholarly outputs per year, including:
- Peer-reviewed journal articles.
- Books or book chapters.
- Prepare and submit an annual progress report for fellowship renewal.
- Initiate research projects and actively seek external research funding.
- Register as a postdoctoral research fellow at UFS.
- Reside in Bloemfontein and actively participate in research and postgraduate activities.
- Participate in programmes offered by the Centre for Graduate Support and the Directorate of Research.
- Collaborate with academic staff and research teams within the Department of Animal Science.
Eligibility Requirements
Applicants must:
- Be South African citizens or foreign nationals.
- Hold a PhD degree in a relevant discipline obtained within the last five years.
- Be available for full-time research at UFS.
- Not hold full-time salaried employment during the fellowship.
- Be willing to relocate to Bloemfontein.
- Spend at least 80% of the fellowship period at the University of the Free State (residential fellowship).

- Academic achievements.
- Research potential.
- Publication record.
- Relevance of previous research experience.
- Expertise in Animal Breeding, Molecular Genetics, Quantitative Genetics, or related fields.
- Potential to contribute to the Department’s research programme.
Fellowship Value
- Annual Fellowship: R270,000
- Additional Research Funding: R30,000 per year for approved research expenses.
