Job Purpose
The General Worker is responsible for maintaining cleanliness and supporting operations in the DAF (Dissolved Air Flotation) Unit, feather area, sump area, and surrounding sections of the abattoir. The role ensures equipment and work areas are clean, operational, and ready for production while following company policies and health and safety standards.
Minimum Requirements
- Grade 12 (NQF Level 4) or equivalent
- Basic maintenance or machinery knowledge/experience (advantageous)
- Ability to work in warm abattoir conditions with strong odours (feathers and blood)
- Physically fit and able to perform manual labour
- Able to stand for long periods
- Willingness to work overtime, shifts, weekends, and public holidays when required
Key Responsibilities
- Clean the DAF unit, feather press, sump pit, and feather area.
- Wash equipment and ensure machinery is clean before production.
- Report damaged or faulty equipment to shift controllers.
- Assist with inspecting broken shackles and yokes on the airline chiller during start-up.
- Monitor equipment during production and report breakdowns promptly.
- Assist with replacing plucker fingers during scheduled weekend maintenance.
- Check that valves, scrapers, screens, and pumps are functioning correctly.
- Ensure the sump pit room is clean and ready before production starts.
- Prepare the feather area for daily operations.
- Ensure the water sieve unit is clean and operational before start-up.
