Purpose of the Role
The Gardening Technician is responsible for maintaining the university’s gardens, lawns, landscapes, and outdoor areas to ensure a clean, safe, and attractive campus environment. The position involves operating gardening equipment, performing landscaping tasks, and maintaining grounds according to university standards.
Key Responsibilities
Grounds and Garden Maintenance
- Mow lawns and maintain grassed areas.
- Trim hedges, shrubs, and plants.
- Remove weeds from garden beds and pathways.
- Plant flowers, trees, and other vegetation.
- Water gardens and landscaped areas.
- Ensure outdoor areas are neat, clean, and presentable.
Equipment Operation
- Operate gardening machinery and equipment.
- Use mowing and irrigation equipment safely and effectively.
- Follow operating procedures and safety guidelines.
Equipment Maintenance
- Inspect gardening equipment regularly.
- Clean and maintain tools and machinery.
- Report faults and repair requirements to supervisors.
- Complete maintenance records and checklists.
Cleaning and Refuse Removal
- Assist with waste collection and disposal.
- Maintain cleanliness of outdoor spaces.
- Remove garden waste and debris.
Health and Safety
- Follow workplace safety procedures.
- Wear the required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
- Maintain safe work areas and equipment storage.
- Report hazards or unsafe conditions.
General Support Duties
- Complete work reports and maintenance checklists.
- Carry out additional duties assigned by supervisors.
- Assist colleagues with landscaping and maintenance projects when required.
Minimum Requirements
Applicants must have:
- Grade 10 (NQF Level 2).
- Relevant gardening, landscaping, grounds maintenance, or similar experience.
Recommended Qualifications and Experience
The following will strengthen an application:
- Grade 12 or National Vocational Certificate (NQF Level 4).
- At least one year of gardening or grounds maintenance experience.
- Machine operating certificate.
- Experience operating lawn mowers, brush cutters, irrigation systems, or landscaping equipment.

Salary and Benefits
Annual Salary
R127,080.97 per annum (including benefits, subject to qualifications, experience, and budget availability).
