    The Environmental Officer Production Grade A: Waste Management will be responsible for implementing and enforcing waste management policies and legislation in the Free State Province. The role focuses on pollution prevention, cleaner production strategies, and ensuring compliance with the National Environmental Management: Waste Act (NEM:WA). The successful candidate will work closely with municipalities, industries, and communities to improve waste management practices and promote sustainable environmental governance.

    Minimum Requirements

    • Bachelor’s Degree in Natural Sciences, Physical Sciences, Environmental Management, or a related field.

    • At least 1 year of relevant experience in waste management and pollution control.

    • Sound knowledge of the NEM: Waste Act (NEM:WA) and related environmental legislation.

    • Strong communication and report-writing skills.

    • Proficiency in computer literacy (MS Office and relevant systems).

    • A valid driver’s license.

    Key Duties & Responsibilities

    • Policy & Legislation Implementation:

      • Contribute to the development, enforcement, and monitoring of environmental policies, guidelines, and regulations.

      • Ensure alignment of waste management initiatives with the provincial and national environmental framework.

    • Waste Management Oversight:

      • Facilitate the responsible management of waste in the Free State, including municipal, industrial, and hazardous waste streams.

      • Support the development of sustainable waste disposal, treatment, and recycling systems.

    • Pollution Control & Cleaner Production:

      • Promote and implement strategies for cleaner production technologies to minimize environmental impact.

      • Provide guidance to stakeholders on best practices for pollution prevention and resource efficiency.

    • Compliance & Enforcement:

      • Administer and enforce statutory obligations regarding the permitting of waste storage, treatment, and disposal facilities.

      • Conduct inspections to ensure adherence to environmental laws and take corrective actions where necessary.

    • Administrative & Support Functions:

      • Compile comprehensive reports and maintain accurate records of inspections, permits, and compliance findings.

      • Provide technical input in the development of operational guidelines, manuals, and awareness campaigns.

      • Ensure compliance with all Public Service prescripts in resource and project management.
