Purpose of the Position
The Director will provide strategic leadership and management of the NRF-funded Centre for Global Change (CGC), with a focus on the Water-Energy-Social Nexus research theme. The role involves advancing sustainability research, securing external funding, supervising postgraduate students and researchers, and building national and international research collaborations.
Key Responsibilities
Strategic Leadership and Management
- Lead, develop, and expand the Centre for Global Change.
- Drive the centre’s sustainability and research agenda in QwaQwa and beyond.
- Coordinate multidisciplinary research activities across faculties and campuses.
- Support the development of a university-wide Sustainability Science Hub aligned with Vision 130.
Research and Academic Leadership
- Supervise postgraduate students and mentor postdoctoral research fellows.
- Maintain an active personal research profile within a relevant discipline.
- Foster high-quality research outputs and innovation.
- Promote engaged scholarship and community-focused research initiatives.
Collaboration and Networking
- Build and strengthen partnerships with:
- Other Centres for Global Change.
- National and international research institutions.
- Industry and government stakeholders.
- Represent the CGC at meetings and research forums.
Financial and Resource Management
- Manage the CGC budget and external grant funding.
- Oversee financial planning and reporting.
- Secure additional funding through grant proposals and partnerships.
Staff Management
- Supervise the CGC Administrator.
- Manage student assistants and research assistants where applicable.
- Provide leadership, mentoring, and performance management.
Compliance and Reporting
- Ensure compliance with all NRF and DSI funding requirements.
- Prepare and submit reports required by funding bodies.
- Attend CGC Directors’ meetings and related engagements.
Minimum Requirements
Applicants must have:
- A Doctoral Degree (NQF Level 10) in a relevant field such as:
- Sustainability Studies
- Environmental Management
- Chemistry
- Related disciplines
- At least 5 years’ experience in:
- Research project management
- Leadership of research groups or projects
- Postgraduate supervision
- Successful grant writing
- A valid driver’s licence.
- Be a full-time permanent employee of the University of the Free State.
Recommended Qualifications and Experience
Preference may be given to candidates with:
- Experience using UFS systems, processes, and procedures.
- Experience with NRF online systems.
- Research and community engagement experience in QwaQwa.
- A valid passport.
