Job Description
The Tech Officer: CNFO Mast and Towers Climber is responsible for performing technical assurance, fulfilment, acceptance, commissioning and preventative maintenance on Core Network and Access telecommunications technologies.
The successful candidate will work with various telecommunications systems and equipment, including wireless technologies, access networks, optical equipment, power equipment, transmission products, broadband, IP, Network Management Systems and customer premises equipment. The role also requires the employee to climb masts and towers and comply with safety, operational and work management procedures.
Key Responsibilities
Preventative Maintenance and Technical Routines
- Monitor equipment and system performance.
- Identify maintenance and technical work activities.
- Facilitate access to sites.
- Perform preventative maintenance and technical activities.
- Replace or service equipment and other resources.
- Conduct general housekeeping at work sites.
- Provide technical assistance and support when required.
- Complete relevant administrative tasks.
- Update equipment and maintenance records.
- Provide reports and recommendations.
- Ensure compliance with DOP and OSS processes and procedures.
Commissioning and Acceptance
- Receive and review technical specifications and requirements.
- Confirm equipment requirements.
- Facilitate site access.
- Perform Acceptance Test Procedures (ATP).
- Commission telecommunications equipment and services.
- Conduct functional testing.
- Provide technical support during installations.
- Complete commissioning administration.
- Confirm successful completion of commissioning activities.
- Provide reports and feedback.
Compliance and Administration
- Submit claim forms according to prescribed procedures.
- Reallocate operational and capital expenditure work as required.
- Follow DOP station-handling procedures.
- Conduct DOP audits within agreed timelines.
- Comply with Workforce Management (WFM) processes and procedures.
- Conduct site surveys and asset verification.
- Escalate deviations and technical issues.
- Maintain and update records.
- Ensure compliance with safety, environmental and operational requirements.
Mast and Tower Climbing
- Climb telecommunications masts and towers.
- Perform technical work at height using appropriate fall-arrest and safety procedures.
- Participate in rescue and rope-access activities where required.
- Maintain the physical fitness required for climbing activities.
Requirements
Education
Candidates must meet one of the following educational requirements:
- NQF Level 6: National Diploma, Advanced Diploma or relevant certificate; or
- NQF Level 4: Grade 12/National Senior Certificate/National Vocational Certificate.
The additional qualification requirements specify:
- Electrical Engineering Diploma (N6/S4) Light Current, at least NQF Level 6; or
- Grade 12 with Mathematics and Science.
Experience
- Relevant operational experience is required.
- The advert specifies 3 years’ relevant experience, while also indicating 1 year of relevant operational experience in the additional information.
- Current or former Telkom full-time bursars, learnership participants and internship candidates may be exempt from the three-year experience requirement, provided they have at least 12 months of relevant experience.
Special Requirements
- Valid climbing and/or fall-arrest certificate, or willingness to undergo fall-arrest training.
- Valid medical clearance certificate or willingness to undergo medical clearance testing.
- Must have no fear of heights.
- Must be physically fit to climb masts and towers.
- Must not be colour blind.
- Valid driver’s licence.
- Willingness to work overtime, after hours, call-outs and standby.
- Willingness to travel and stay away overnight when required.
- Ability to work effectively in stressful environments.
