Job Purpose
To manage the Fruit & Veg department effectively by maximizing turnover and profitability, minimizing stock shortages and waste, and ensuring compliance with company standards, processes, and policies.
Minimum Requirements
- Grade 12 (Matric).
- 2–4 years’ experience in a Produce/Fruit & Veg environment.
- 1–2 years’ experience managing a department and supervising sales staff.
- Experience in coaching, training, handling non-compliance, and performance management.

Key Responsibilities
Merchandising Management
- Conduct regular quality checks on merchandise.
- Ensure products are displayed according to planograms and company standards.
- Handle products according to standard operating procedures (SOPs).
- Ensure products are prepared according to recipe specifications where applicable.
- Prepare the department for trading before store opening.
- Identify fast-selling lines and sales opportunities.
- Ensure products are wrapped and packed according to standards.
- Maintain sufficient stock to meet customer demand.
- Monitor promotional activities and ensure compliance with promotional calendars.
- Maintain cleanliness in sales and back-up areas.
- Rotate stock according to sell-by dates and company policy.
- Maintain merchandising standards throughout the day while minimizing waste.
Food Safety & Hygiene
- Maintain hygiene and housekeeping standards.
- Ensure proper stock rotation.
- Monitor compliance with food safety and health and safety standards.
- Manage non-conformances through corrective actions.
- Implement and monitor cleaning schedules and sanitation procedures.
- Complete Food Safety Daily Checklists.
Customer Service Management
- Respond to customer requests and queries.
- Assist customers with replacement products when items are out of stock.
- Explain delivery schedules and stock availability issues.
- Ensure departmental equipment is functional and properly manned.
Staff Management
- Communicate important information to staff.
- Set targets, delegate tasks, and establish priorities.
- Manage procedural, policy, and legislative non-compliance.
- Attend regional meetings and communicate updates to staff.
- Manage staff scheduling using Kronos.
- Coach and develop employees.
Administration
- Ensure equipment is maintained and operational.
- Monitor maintenance standards.
- Track waste and ensure compliance with procedures.
- Monitor turnover and identify opportunities to improve sales and profitability.
- Ensure shelf-edge labels (SELs) are current and visible to customers.
Systems and Reporting
- Perform gap scanning for out-of-stock items.
- Identify, count, and record out-of-stocks and over-stocks.
- Generate Excel reports from SAP and communicate stock concerns to Demand Planning.
- Process Inter-Department Transfers (IDTs) through SAP.
- Process reduced-to-clear items and waste according to SOPs.
- Monitor electronic communications regularly.
- Ensure stock counts (PIDs) are completed accurately according to the National P&L schedule.
