    Position Purpose

    The Inspector: Occupational Hygiene is responsible for monitoring and enforcing compliance with occupational hygiene standards in the mining sector. The role focuses on protecting mine workers from health hazards by conducting inspections, audits, investigations, risk assessments, and enforcing compliance with the Mine Health and Safety Act.

    Key Responsibilities

    Occupational Hygiene Inspections and Audits

    • Conduct underground, shaft, and surface mine inspections.
    • Perform occupational hygiene audits at mining operations.
    • Assess exposure to occupational health hazards and stressors.
    • Monitor compliance with Mine Health and Safety legislation.
    • Recommend corrective measures where non-compliance is identified.
    • Take enforcement action when necessary.

    Accident and Incident Investigations

    • Investigate mining-related accidents and incidents.
    • Investigate complaints relating to occupational hygiene matters.
    • Examine workplace health risks and contributing factors.
    • Compile detailed investigation reports.
    • Recommend preventative and corrective actions.

    Risk Assessment and Compliance Monitoring

    • Identify occupational hygiene hazards in mining environments.
    • Analyse accident trends and risk patterns.
    • Determine high-risk mining operations.
    • Evaluate hazard control measures.
    • Promote continuous improvement in workplace health standards.

    Regulatory and Technical Support

    • Provide input into:
      • Mining regulations
      • Occupational hygiene standards
      • Technical guidelines
      • Industry policies
    • Participate in the review and development of mining legislation and standards.
    • Assess applications for exemptions, approvals, and permissions related to occupational hygiene.

    Mining Rights and Environmental Consultation

    • Investigate and provide technical input regarding:
      • Mine closures
      • Prospecting rights
      • Mining rights
      • Mining permits
      • Environmental Management Programmes (EMPs)
      • Township development applications

    Professional and Advisory Functions

    • Serve on relevant boards of examiners when required.
    • Provide specialist occupational hygiene advice.
    • Recommend practical mining health solutions.
    • Support regional occupational health initiatives.

    Reporting and Administration

    • Compile inspection and audit reports.
    • Contribute to regional and national reports.
    • Maintain accurate records of inspections and investigations.
    • Monitor implementation of corrective actions.

    Minimum Requirements

    Qualifications

    • National Diploma in Occupational Hygiene OR
    • National Diploma in Environmental Health (NQF Level 6)

    Plus

    • Certificate in Mine Environmental Control

    Experience

    • Minimum of 3 years’ experience in Occupational Hygiene.

    Additional Requirements

    • Valid driver’s licence.
