    First Responder Job Overview

    As a First Responder, you’ll work closely with survivors of sexual and gender-based violence, offering immediate support, linking them to essential services, and helping them navigate their recovery journey.

    Key Responsibilities

    The role includes, but is not limited to, the following responsibilities:

    1. Program Implementation

    • Provide acute psychological first aid and trauma containment for survivors of violence.
    • Ensure survivors receive information about Post-Violence Care (PVC) services.
    • Offer treatment literacy on sexual and reproductive health and connect survivors with appropriate care.
    • Accompany survivors during police statement procedures and forensic examinations upon request.

    2. Survivor Support

    • Develop individualized Care Plans and Safety Plans for survivors.
    • Deliver ongoing counseling and manage follow-ups via telephonic, home, or facility visits.
    • Introduce survivors to DREAMS (Determined, Resilient, Empowered, AIDS-free, Mentored, and Safe) services.

    3. Community Awareness

    • Conduct workshops, health talks, community dialogues, and other awareness activities in collaboration with stakeholders.
    • Sensitize facility staff and stakeholders on GBV-related issues.

    4. Administrative Tasks

    • Maintain accurate records, including survivor logbooks, reports, and notes.
    • Support the administrative requirements of both NACOSA and the Department of Health.

    5. Networking and Advocacy

    • Foster relationships with government departments, NGOs, and other service providers.
    • Communicate challenges and updates to the management team promptly.

    Qualifications and Requirements

    To qualify for this position, applicants must meet the following criteria:

    Education and Professional Experience

    • A Diploma in Social Auxiliary Work.
    • Registration with the South African Council of Social Services.
    • At least 3 years of work experience in social auxiliary counseling, case management, and GBV-related programmatic areas.

    Skills and Knowledge

    • Expertise in:
      • Sexual and reproductive health
      • Gender-Based Violence
      • HIV Testing Services
    • Competency in Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Outlook).
    • Proficiency in English and at least one other South African language.

    Additional Attributes

    • Empathy and sensitivity towards survivors’ experiences.
    • Strong ability to handle high-stress and sensitive situations.
    • Networking and relationship-building skills.
    • Knowledge of cultural norms and practices.

    Advantageous Extras

    • A valid driver’s license and access to a personal vehicle.
    • Prior experience in the NGO/NPO sector.
