Job Description
The Postdoctoral Research Fellow will conduct advanced research in grassland and rangeland science, focusing on regenerative grazing practices and grazing management systems. The role is designed to provide postdoctoral researchers with an opportunity to further develop their research expertise under the mentorship of established academics while contributing to innovative scientific knowledge and sustainable agricultural practices.
Key Responsibilities
Research and Innovation
- Conduct high-quality, innovative research on:
- The impact of regenerative grazing practices on soil health and vegetation dynamics.
- Precision grazing management techniques.
- Application of regenerative grazing systems in semi-arid and arid environments.
- Design, implement, and manage research projects and field studies.
- Analyse and interpret research data using appropriate scientific methods.
- Contribute to the advancement of sustainable livestock and grazing management practices.
Scientific Publications
- Produce and publish a minimum of three scholarly outputs per year, including:
- DHET-accredited journal articles.
- Scholarly books or book chapters.
- Present research findings at conferences, seminars, and academic forums.
Research Funding and Project Development
- Initiate new research projects.
- Identify funding opportunities and assist in preparing grant applications.
- Contribute to building collaborative research networks and partnerships.
Academic and Institutional Participation
- Register as a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at UFS.
- Reside in Bloemfontein and spend at least 80% of the fellowship period at the university.
- Participate in activities organised by the Centre for Graduate Support and the Directorate of Research.
- Submit annual progress reports for fellowship renewal consideration.
Required Knowledge and Skills
- Advanced knowledge of grassland, rangeland, grazing, livestock, or agricultural systems.
- Strong research methodology and scientific writing skills.
- Ability to work independently and manage research projects.
- Statistical data analysis and interpretation skills.
- Excellent communication and academic presentation abilities.
- Ability to collaborate with multidisciplinary research teams.
Minimum Requirements
- PhD in a relevant field obtained within the last five years.
- Strong academic and research record.
- Demonstrated publication potential or publication history.
- Availability for full-time research.
- Willingness to relocate to Bloemfontein for the fellowship period.
Advantageous Requirements
- Valid driver’s licence.
- Experience in grazing systems, livestock production, rangeland ecology, soil science, or sustainable agriculture.
- Track record of research publications and conference presentations.
Remuneration
- Fellowship stipend: R270,000 per annum
- Additional research funding: R30,000 per annum
