Job Description: Technical Lead – Histology
The Technical Lead – Histology is responsible for the overall technical and operational management of the histology laboratory. The role ensures that laboratory services are delivered efficiently and in accordance with professional, regulatory, and quality standards, while maintaining excellence in diagnostic accuracy and turnaround times.
The incumbent oversees daily laboratory operations, including workflow management, quality control, and the effective use of laboratory equipment and systems. The Technical Lead ensures full compliance with HPCSA, SANAS, occupational health and safety regulations, and Ampath policies and procedures.
This role requires advanced knowledge of histology techniques, pathology test procedures, and laboratory instrumentation. The Technical Lead provides technical guidance, troubleshooting support, and continuous improvement initiatives to enhance laboratory performance and service delivery.
As a leader, the Technical Lead is responsible for supervising, mentoring, and developing laboratory staff, fostering a culture of accountability, teamwork, and professional growth. The role includes performance management, training coordination, and support of talent development within the laboratory.
The Technical Lead also manages laboratory resources, including consumables, equipment, and budgets, and ensures accurate reporting and documentation through laboratory information systems such as Meditech and standard office applications.
Through effective leadership, quality assurance, and operational oversight, the Technical Lead – Histology plays a key role in sustaining clinical excellence and supporting high-quality patient care.
Key Responsibilities

Lead and oversee the day-to-day operations of the histology laboratory to ensure efficient, high-quality service delivery

Ensure accurate, timely, and reliable diagnostic results in line with clinical and operational standards

Maintain compliance with HPCSA, SANAS, occupational health, and safety regulations

Oversee pathology test procedures, laboratory instrumentation, and methodologies
-
Monitor quality control, quality assurance, and continuous improvement initiatives
-
Provide technical guidance, troubleshooting, and operational support to laboratory staff
-
Lead, motivate, develop, and manage a team of histology professionals
-
Foster a culture of collaboration, accountability, and high performance

Manage laboratory resources, budgets, and reporting requirements
-
Ensure effective use of laboratory information systems (e.g. Meditech) and Microsoft Office tools
Minimum Requirements
-
Relevant Medical Technology qualification or certification
-
Current HPCSA registration in Histology (mandatory)
-
Minimum of 5 years’ experience as a Medical Technologist, Medical Technician, or Medical Laboratory Scientist in a pathology laboratory

Proven experience in laboratory operations and quality management
