Job Overview
The Clinical Nurse / Professional Nurse (Theatre Scrub Nurse) is responsible for delivering high-quality, safe, and patient-centred nursing care within the operating theatre environment. The role focuses on scrub nursing, coordination of patient care, and collaboration with the multidisciplinary healthcare team to ensure optimal surgical outcomes.
The incumbent applies scientifically based nursing principles, clinical expertise, and technical skills to care for patients holistically — addressing physical, emotional, social, and spiritual needs. The nurse also contributes to quality improvement, risk management, staff development, and innovation, in line with Netcare’s values of Care, Truth, Participation, Compassion, and Dignity.
Job Description
1. Clinical Care and Patient Management

Assess, plan, implement, evaluate, and document individualized nursing care.

Act as a clinical resource to support staff in delivering safe and effective patient care.

Perform scrub nurse duties according to surgical standards and hospital SOPs.

Coordinate patient care within the multidisciplinary healthcare team.

Communicate effectively with patients, families, doctors, and healthcare professionals.

Advocate for patients to ensure optimal outcomes.

Initiate and manage emergency and resuscitation procedures (within Scope of Practice).

Participate in ward and theatre rounds with medical practitioners.

Maintain accurate shift and patient care documentation.
2. Consistency and Quality of Care

Ensure continuity of care and effective communication between nursing staff and management.

Apply advanced nursing care practices in a specialised theatre environment.

Monitor patient conditions and adjust care plans accordingly.

Ensure compliance with professional nursing standards and legal requirements.
3. Quality, Risk, and Safety Management

Promote a safe, clean, and secure environment for patients, staff, and visitors.

Monitor and ensure the safe use of equipment, instruments, and supplies.

Participate in quality improvement initiatives and risk management processes.

Support cost-effective care within the allocated budget.
4. Teamwork and Collaboration

Work collaboratively with theatre teams, ward staff, and other hospital departments.

Contribute positively to team performance and hospital objectives.

Maintain strong professional relationships within the multidisciplinary team.
5. Education, Training, and Mentorship

Support the education and mentoring of nursing staff and students.

Participate in in-service training, orientation of new staff, and emergency drills.

Collaborate with Clinical Facilitators to identify and meet training needs.

Keep staff informed of updated policies, procedures, and best practices.
6. Resource and Staff Allocation

Allocate nursing staff based on patient acuity and required skill levels.

Adjust staffing to meet clinical demands using sound clinical judgment.
7. Professional Development and Innovation

Maintain professional registration with the South African Nursing Council (SANC).

Engage in continuous professional development.

Support the adoption of electronic patient records, e-scripts, and clinical order systems (CareOn).
Inherent Requirements
-
Registered as a Professional Nurse with the South African Nursing Council (SANC)

Extensive knowledge of general and specialised nursing theory and practice

Strong understanding of modern nursing care principles

Proven experience in a theatre / scrub nurse environment (preferred)
