Job Overview
This is an academic + community-focused role where you’ll:
- Teach Community Development
- Conduct research
- Work closely with communities, NGOs, and government structures
In simple terms:
You’ll be a lecturer, researcher, and community engagement specialist.
Key Responsibilities
Teaching & Academic Work
- Teach undergraduate and postgraduate modules
- Develop and update curriculum (aligned with SAQA standards)
- Supervise postgraduate research
Community Engagement
- Build partnerships with:
- NGOs
- Municipalities
- Community-based organisations
- Coordinate fieldwork & service learning
- Support real-world community projects
Research & Publications
- Publish in accredited journals
- Present at conferences
- Apply for research funding (e.g. NRF)
Academic Administration
- Participate in faculty committees
- Contribute to department activities
Minimum Requirements
Option 1 (Permanent)
- PhD (NQF Level 10) in Community Development or related field
Option 2 (Contract → Permanent path)
- Master’s (NQF Level 9)
- Must complete PhD within 5 years
Additional Requirements
- Teaching ability at tertiary level
- Conference presentations
- Research potential (publications or manuscripts)
Recommended (Advantage)
- 3+ years university teaching experience
- Experience in:
- Community partnerships
- Work-integrated learning (WIL)
- Supervising postgrad students
- At least 3 publications
- Active in academic or professional networks
