Job Overview
The Senior Director of Estates and Infrastructure provides strategic leadership and governance oversight for the university’s estates, infrastructure, facilities, and built assets. The role ensures that the infrastructure across all campuses is resilient, compliant, safe, and future-ready, enabling academic excellence, student success, institutional sustainability, and stakeholder confidence.
Job Description
The role is responsible for:
- Developing and implementing infrastructure strategy and master plans aligned with CUT Vision 2030.
- Managing capital projects from planning through delivery.
- Overseeing asset and facilities management for all university buildings and infrastructure.
- Providing people leadership and developing team capability.
- Ensuring financial oversight and cost-effective management of infrastructure budgets.
- Maintaining governance, risk, and compliance in line with legislation and audit requirements.
- Engaging with internal and external stakeholders, including reporting on infrastructure performance.
Key Responsibilities
- Infrastructure Strategy & Master Planning – Lead long-term infrastructure planning for sustainable development.
- Asset & Facilities Management – Ensure optimal maintenance, operations, and utilization of all university assets.
- Capital Projects Delivery – Oversee construction and upgrade projects, ensuring timely delivery within budget.
- People Leadership & Capability – Manage, mentor, and develop a team of infrastructure and estates professionals.
- Financial Management – Manage budgets, cost control, and financial reporting for estates and infrastructure.
- Governance, Risk & Compliance – Ensure compliance with legislation, audit requirements, and governance standards.
- Stakeholder Engagement & Reporting – Collaborate with stakeholders and provide regular performance updates.
Minimum Requirements
- Qualification: Master’s degree (MSc / MTech / M. Eng) in Built Environment (Construction Management, Quantity Surveying, or Construction Project Management), Civil Engineering, or Engineering Management.
- Experience:
- 10 years managing construction projects, maintenance, facilities, and infrastructure planning.
- 5 years of people management experience.
- Proven experience in managing infrastructure portfolios in public/private sector or higher education.
- Knowledge of health & safety, construction, labour, environmental legislation, and building codes.
- Valid driver’s license.
Desired/Preferred Qualifications and Experience
- Master’s in Built Environment, Civil Engineering, or Engineering Management with an Estate & Infrastructure Management qualification.
- 15 years’ experience in Estates & Facilities management, including 8 years of people management.
- Professional registration with ECSA, SACPCMP, SACQSP, or equivalent.
